Shrine of al-Abbas ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him
IRQ-0025
Introduction
The Shrine of Abbas ibn Ali is the second great central shrine of Karbala and stands near the shrine of Imam Husayn. Abbas ibn Ali was the son of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib and Umm al-Banin Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyya. He is remembered as the brother of Imam Husayn, the standard-bearer of Karbala, the protector of the tents, and one of the highest symbols of loyalty in Islamic devotional memory. He was born in Medina and raised in the Alid household, where courage, discipline, reverence, worship, and service to the Ahl al-Bayt formed the moral atmosphere of his upbringing.
His childhood and youth were shaped by the scholarly and spiritual environment of Medina. From his father Imam Ali he inherited the memory of courage, eloquence, insight, and martial discipline, while his mother Umm al-Banin became remembered for her deep devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt and for raising sons who would stand with Husayn. Historically, Abbas is not remembered merely as a warrior, but as a brother whose manners before Imam Husayn expressed loyalty, obedience, modesty, and complete self-sacrifice. Reliable early sources do not preserve a verified lifetime number of his Hajj or Umrah journeys, so no exact number is asserted.
Genealogical works name Lady Lubaba bint Ubayd Allah ibn al-Abbas as his wife. Ubayd Allah and al-Fadl are the best-known names among his children, while reports vary concerning additional children, their number, and the martyrdom of a son at Karbala. His descendants are generally traced through Ubayd Allah, so disputed names are presented cautiously rather than as an undisputed enumeration.
During the journey of Karbala, Abbas was one of the most important men in Imam Husayn's caravan. From Medina to Mecca and then from Mecca toward Iraq, he remained a protector of the Ahl al-Bayt, a guardian of the tents, and the standard-bearer of the camp. When the caravan reached Karbala on 2 Muharram 61 AH, Abbas remained fully loyal to Imam Husayn under increasingly severe conditions. After access to water was restricted after the seventh of Muharram, his memory became permanently connected with water, loyalty, and the thirst of the children of the Ahl al-Bayt.
When access to the Euphrates was restricted, water ceased to be only a physical need and became a central question of siege, oppression, and human dignity. Reports mention earlier efforts to obtain water, but the final water mission of al-Abbas permanently connected his name with the thirsty children, the tents, and loyalty. Early historical works preserve the central event, while the waterskin, rajaz verses, and final moments are narrated more fully in later maqtal literature.
According to the well-known maqtal and devotional account, al-Abbas reached the river, filled the waterskin, and refrained from drinking when he remembered the thirst of the camp and the condition of Imam Husayn. The wording and details vary, but the central meaning of self-denial is firmly established in devotional memory. It is appropriate to present it as a great moral virtue without claiming an undisputed earliest chain for every verse or exchange.
On the return route, attackers used trees and the path as cover. An official al-Abbas Shrine article summarising maqtal reports associates Yazid ibn al-Raqqad and Hakim ibn al-Tufayl with the ambush and attributes the blow to the right arm to Yazid ibn al-Raqqad. The memory of this sacrifice is attached to the Maqam of the Right Palm in Bab Baghdad. The present site is not an exact coordinate identified by early chronicles, but an attributed memorial preserved within later Karbala devotional geography.
After the right hand was severed, al-Abbas continued the mission with his left. Later maqtal narratives associate the severing of the left hand with Hakim ibn al-Tufayl or other attackers, though names and sequence are not uniform. The Maqam of the Left Palm in Bab al-Khan commemorates this second loss. Neither palm maqam is his grave; both are memorials along the attributed route of his martyrdom.
Later maqtal literature describes the waterskin being pierced, the water spilling away, further wounds, and al-Abbas falling to the ground. These details shaped his memory not merely as a warrior, but as the water-bearer of the thirsty, the support of his brother, and the symbol of a service left physically unfinished. The emotional force remains because his purpose was not personal victory but delivering water to the tents.
The shrine of Abbas ibn Ali is a symbol of loyalty, sincerity, sacrifice, courage, and support for the Ahl al-Bayt. Over the centuries the burial place developed through repeated construction and restoration into the present complex of the gilded dome, minarets, courtyards, arcades, libraries, museums, research institutions, and pilgrim services. The space between the al-Abbas and Imam Husayn shrines has become one of Karbala's most recognizable devotional landscapes. Pilgrims visit to make dua, perform ziyara, renew the meaning of loyalty, and express love for the family of the Prophet. In the ziyara of Karbala, the shrine of Abbas is spiritually paired with the shrine of Imam Husayn.
The burial place of al-Abbas became known separately from the collective burial near Imam Husayn, at the location associated with his martyrdom. The route between the two central shrines leads the pilgrim through the story of two brothers, one purpose, and shared sacrifice. The complete martyrdom narrative is kept on this central page, while the separate Right Palm and Left Palm pages explain the present memorial sites, their structures, and their later devotional identifications; neither palm maqam is presented as a second grave. For visitors and families, the final lesson is that loyalty is not a slogan: it is disciplined service, protection of the vulnerable, fulfillment of trust, and willingness to place a just responsibility before personal safety.

Historical / Religious Importance
The Al-Abbas Shrine is Karbala's central memorial of loyalty, water-bearing, and protection of the Ahl al-Bayt. Al-Abbas transforms responsibility and sacrifice into a lasting human example.
His separate but nearby burial clarifies the geography of Ashura. The space between the two shrines is a major part of collective mourning and pilgrimage.
The modern shrine institution connects this memory with education, research, culture, and service to visitors.
