حضرت مسلم بن عقیل رضی اللہ عنہ کا روضہ امام حسین علیہ السلام کے سفیر کی معروف اور بنیادی تدفین گاہ ہے اور مسجد کوفہ کے مشرقی جانب واقع ہے۔ یہ مزار حضرت ہانی بن عروہ رضی اللہ عنہ اور مختار ثقفی سے منسوب مقامات کے ساتھ کوفہ کی مقدس تاریخی فضا کا حصہ ہے۔ چونکہ حضرت مسلم کا مشن واقعۂ کربلا سے براہ راست پہلے پیش آیا، اس لیے یہ صفحہ ثانوی یادگار نہیں بلکہ مکمل سوانحی اور اصلی مدفن کا اندراج ہے۔
حضرت مسلم، عقیل بن ابی طالب کے فرزند، امام علی علیہ السلام کے بھتیجے اور امام حسین علیہ السلام کے چچا زاد بھائی تھے۔ وہ بنی ہاشم سے تعلق رکھتے اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے گھرانے سے نہایت قریب تھے۔ دستیاب مآخذ ان کی ولادت، والدہ اور ابتدائی زندگی کی بہت کم قطعی تفصیل محفوظ کرتے ہیں اور بعد کے خاندانی بیانات میں اختلاف بھی ہے۔ ان کی مضبوط تاریخی شناخت ۶۰ ہجری کے واقعات میں سامنے آتی ہے، جہاں وہ قابل اعتماد، شجاع اور منظم نمائندے کے طور پر دکھائی دیتے ہیں۔
معاویہ کی وفات اور یزید کی بیعت کے بعد کوفہ کے سرکردہ لوگوں کے خطوط امام حسین علیہ السلام تک پہنچے اور انہیں آنے کی دعوت دی گئی۔ امام حسین نے حضرت مسلم کو بھیجا تاکہ معلوم کریں کہ یہ وعدے حقیقی اور پائیدار عزم کی نمائندگی کرتے ہیں یا نہیں۔ روایات میں پہلے مختار بن ابی عبید کے گھر اور پھر رازداری کی ضرورت پر ہانی بن عروہ کے ہاں قیام کا ذکر ملتا ہے۔ ان کا کام تحقیق اور نمائندگی تھا: امام حسین کی طرف سے بیعت لینا، شہر کی حالت دیکھنا اور بے قابو جنگ شروع کرنے کے بجائے دیانت دار رپورٹ بھیجنا۔
ابتدا میں بڑی تعداد نے حمایت کی بیعت کی، لیکن تواریخ میں اعداد مختلف ہیں۔ حضرت مسلم نے لکھا کہ شہر استقبال کے لیے تیار دکھائی دیتا ہے، مگر عبید اللہ بن زیاد کے گورنر بن کر کوفہ پہنچنے سے حالات بدل گئے۔ اس نے جاسوسوں، قبائلی سرداروں، وظائف بند کرنے کی دھمکی، اجتماعی سزا اور شامی لشکر کے خوف کو استعمال کیا۔ یہ تیز رفتار شکست دکھاتی ہے کہ عوامی وعدہ تعداد میں بڑا ہو سکتا ہے مگر سماجی جرأت اور منظم ذمہ داری نہ ہو تو پائیدار نہیں رہتا۔
جب ہانی بن عروہ گرفتار اور تشدد کا نشانہ بنے تو حضرت مسلم اپنے حامیوں کے ساتھ علانیہ نکلے۔ شام ہوتے ہوتے قبائلی سردار اور خاندان اپنے افراد کو واپس بلاتے گئے اور جماعت منتشر ہو گئی۔ وہ کوفہ کی گلیوں میں بے راہنما پھرے، یہاں تک کہ طوعہ نامی خاتون نے عارضی پناہ دی۔ یہ واقعہ پوری داستان کا طاقت ور اخلاقی منظر ہے: ایک نجی گھر نے وہ ذمہ داری پوری کی جسے ہزاروں علانیہ بیعت کرنے والے نبھا نہ سکے۔
