Shrine of Sayyid Idris al-Hasani, May Allah Have Mercy On Him
IRQ-0120
Introduction
The Shrine of Sayyid Idris al-Hasani, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, holds an important place in the Hasani Sayyid memory of Karrada al-Sharqiyya in Baghdad. Locally he is remembered as Sayyid Idris, Idris ibn Musa al-Thani, and Saba al-Karrada. The shrine shows that Baghdad’s neighborhoods preserve not only political and urban history but also deep layers of Sayyid genealogy, burial memory, and popular visitation.
Genealogical material identifies him as Idris ibn Musa al-Thani ibn Abdullah ibn Musa al-Jawn ibn Abdullah al-Mahd ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna ibn al-Hasan al-Sibt ibn Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, Peace Be Upon Him. Ibn Inaba’s Umdat al-Talib is cited for describing Idris ibn Musa al-Thani as a noble Sayyid, and Muhsin al-Amin’s A'yan al-Shi'a preserves further material about his lineage and historical setting.
Some sources mention his mother as Amah al-Majid, a Moroccan umm walad. This detail gives the entry a more human and historical texture. It shows that Alawi and Hasani family histories were not limited to a simple line on paper; they were also connected with mothers, households, travel, political pressure, and the wider Abbasid world.
A'yan al-Shi'a transmits from al-Mas'udi’s Muruj al-Dhahab an important account from the Abbasid period. Sa'id al-Hajib was taking Musa al-Thani from Madinah, and Idris was with him. Near Zabala, Arab groups, especially from Banu Fazara, tried to rescue them; Musa al-Thani is reported to have been poisoned, while Idris was freed by Banu Fazara. This account places Idris within a world of Alawi pressure, dangerous travel, and tribal protection.
Another historical association says that Idris ibn Musa was with Ahmad ibn Isa al-Husayni during the Alawi movement in Rayy in 250 AH. This moves Sayyid Idris beyond a purely local shrine identity and places him within the third-century AH Alawi political and genealogical landscape.
Some modern summaries give 300 AH as his death date and connect his burial with Karrada in Baghdad. However, academic summaries also raise the question of whether the present Karrada shrine belongs definitively to this Idris ibn Musa al-Thani or to another Sayyid Idris. For that reason, this entry preserves the shrine respectfully while using cautious language for the burial attribution.
The local history of the shrine is also meaningful. Baghdad materials say that the site was once a small and simple grave-like place surrounded by gardens, fields, and a small cemetery. Later, Shaykh Mustafa al-Baghdadi renewed the building, a blue dome was built, and the outer enclosure is associated with construction by Sayyid Ahmad Jaffal al-Bakri or al-Bajri around September 1963. These stages show how a simple local grave developed into a neighborhood shrine.
The title Saba al-Karrada is part of public memory. Such titles usually express people’s confidence, protection, courage, or emotional attachment to a saintly Sayyid figure, but they do not need to be treated as literal early historical titles. This entry therefore keeps the title as a local devotional name, because it is part of the shrine’s identity.
For visitors, the shrine of Sayyid Idris al-Hasani connects the Hasani Sayyid line, Abbasid-era Alawi pressure, the scattered history of the Prophet’s family, and the religious life of Karrada. For researchers, the entry is especially useful because it requires separating classical genealogy, A'yan al-Shi'a’s historical reports, local architecture, and the debate over burial attribution.

Historical / Religious Importance
This shrine keeps Hasani Sayyid memory alive inside Baghdad and turns Karrada al-Sharqiyya into more than an urban neighborhood. The figure of Sayyid Idris al-Hasani is linked with lineage, Abbasid-era pressure, and the movement and trials of Alawi families.
The Zabala account is especially important. Through al-Mas'udi’s report preserved in later biographical material, the story connects Musa al-Thani, Sa'id al-Hajib, Banu Fazara, and the rescue of Idris. This prevents the page from becoming a simple shrine note and connects it with third-century AH Alawi political history.
At the same time, attribution caution is necessary, because academic summaries question whether the present Karrada shrine can be identified with certainty. The strongest method is to preserve the shrine respectfully as attributed, while keeping classical genealogy, local architecture, the title Saba al-Karrada, and the burial debate as separate layers.
