Introduction

The tomb of Abu al-Qasim Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, stands in the eastern portico of the Al-Kazimayn Holy Shrine in Kadhimiyah, Baghdad, close to the grave of his student Shaykh al-Mufid. It is his recognized principal burial place and one of the clearest physical markers of Imami hadith, ziyarat literature, and scholarly transmission between Qum and Baghdad. His full name is recorded as Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Musa ibn Masrur ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi. His family belonged to the learned world of hadith, and his father Muhammad was also connected with transmission. Growing up in such a household placed him within a disciplined culture of chains of narration, teachers, written collections, and careful preservation of religious reports. Qum was one of the most important centres of Imami hadith in the fourth Islamic century. Ibn Qulawayh learned from scholars of Qum and from the hadith networks of his family, then travelled to Baghdad. This movement carried the transmitted learning of Qum into one of the largest centres of jurisprudence, theology, debate, and book culture in the Abbasid world. Rijal al-Najashi and Shaykh al-Tusi's al-Fihrist describe him as trustworthy, eminent, learned, and the author of numerous books. His reputation did not depend only on collecting reports. Later scholars valued his selection of teachers, attention to chains, legal understanding, and the reliability associated with his scholarly name. His best-known surviving work is Kamil al-Ziyarat. The book arranges reports concerning the visitation of the Prophet, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, the Ahl al-Bayt, Imam al-Husayn, Peace Be Upon Him, the Imams, their descendants, and sacred places. It became one of the principal foundations of later ziyarat literature and helped organize devotional memory into a structured scholarly form. In the book's preface, Ibn Qulawayh explains his purpose and speaks about the transmitters from whom he accepted material. Later scholars debated how broadly this statement should be applied: some understood it as a wide authentication, while others limited it to direct teachers or particular chains. The debate itself shows the continuing importance of his method for hadith criticism and rijal studies. Among his important teachers was Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Kulayni, while Shaykh al-Mufid became his most famous student. This teacher-student chain linked al-Kulayni, the hadith culture of Qum, Ibn Qulawayh, the rational and legal scholarship of Baghdad, and the later Imami tradition represented by al-Mufid and Shaykh al-Tusi. Old bibliographical works attribute to Ibn Qulawayh books on prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, ziyarat, legal rulings, and other subjects, although not all have survived. The survival and repeated use of Kamil al-Ziyarat therefore represents only part of a wider scholarly career. His works show that he was concerned with law, worship, transmission, and the practical religious life of the community. His death is commonly placed around 368 AH. He was buried in Kadhimiyah near the shrines of Imam Musa al-Kazim and Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, Peace Be Upon Them. Shaykh al-Mufid was later buried close to him, placing teacher and student in one sacred scholarly landscape and making their physical proximity a symbol of intellectual succession. Modern care for his grave has made this continuity visible. In 2016 a new wooden chest and covering were installed, and later new shrine grilles were prepared for Ibn Qulawayh and Shaykh al-Mufid. Official documentation of the burials and fittings shows that the scholarly memory preserved in books is also maintained through architecture, inscriptions, and custodial care. For visitors, the tomb recalls trust in transmission, respect for chains of narration, love of the Ahl al-Bayt, and the discipline of ziyarat. For researchers, it opens a path into the scholarly network of Qum and Baghdad, the formation of ziyarat literature, the history of rijal criticism, and the way a teacher's learning passed through students into later Islamic institutions.

Historical / Religious Importance

The tomb of Ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi is important because he holds a central place in the history of Imami hadith and ziyarat literature. His burial in Kadhimiya connects transmitted learning with the devotional atmosphere of the Ahl al-Bayt. Kamil al-Ziyarat gave structured scholarly form to the concept of visitation. Through it, love of the Ahl al-Bayt, shrine visitation, devotional manners, reward, loyalty, and religious memory appear as an organized tradition. For researchers, the site helps explain the scholarly relationship between Qum and Baghdad, the teacher-student chain, and the formation of ziyarat literature. It is therefore not only a scholar’s burial place, but a marker of an entire hadith and devotional tradition.
