يقع مرقد السيد أحمد الرفاعي الكبير رحمة الله عليه في أم عبيدة التابعة لناحية السيد أحمد الرفاعي في قضاء الميمونة بمحافظة ميسان، ولا ينبغي الخلط بينه وبين مدينة الرفاعي في محافظة ذي قار. وهذا هو مدفنه الرئيسي المعروف ومركز كبير للطريقة الرفاعية.
تجعل الروايات ولادته في حدود سنة 512هـ / 1118م في منطقة البطائح. وكانت هذه البيئة قائمة على المجاري المائية والأهوار والقرى الصغيرة والتعليم الفقهي والتربية الروحية والحياة الدينية الشعبية. وفي هذا المحيط تبرز صفاته التي اشتهر بها: الزهد، والتواضع، والخدمة، والذكر، والقرب من الفقراء، والرحمة بالخلق.
كان والده السيد علي أبو الحسن رحمة الله عليه، وهو المعروف في بغداد بلقب السيد السلطان علي. ويحفظ الكتيب المثبت في جامع ومرقد السيد السلطان علي ببغداد نسبا من جهة الأب يتصل بالبيت الرفاعي. ولهذا الكتيب قيمة بوصفه شاهدا مزاريا ومحليا، غير أنه ينبغي أن يقرأ بوصفه قرينة مساعدة لا بديلا عن التثبت النسبي من الكتب المطبوعة.
وبحسب ما يظهر في الكتيب، فإن السيد السلطان علي هو: السيد السلطان علي بن السيد يحيى بن ثابت بن حازم بن أحمد بن علي بن رفاعة الحسن المكي الهاشمي. ورفاعة هذا هو الجد الذي عرفت به الأسرة الرفاعية. ثم يواصل الكتيب النسب إلى الإمام موسى الكاظم، والإمام جعفر الصادق، والإمام محمد الباقر، والإمام علي زين العابدين، والإمام الحسين، والإمام علي بن أبي طالب عليهم السلام.
وتذكر السطر الأخير من الكتيب وفاة السيد السلطان علي سنة 519هـ. وهذه السنة توافق الإطار المعروف في سيرة السيد أحمد الرفاعي رحمة الله عليه، إذ كان صغير السن عند وفاة والده. ولذلك تعطي السيرة الرفاعية أهمية لموضوع اليتم والرعاية العائلية والتكوين العلمي والروحي بعد وفاة الأب.
تنسبه المصادر الرفاعية إلى السادة الحسينيين، كما تظهر في سيرته جهتان: جهة علمية فقهية، وجهة تربوية روحية. وقد ارتبط ببيئة شافعية، إلا أن شهرته العامة تعلقت خاصة بالتواضع والرحمة بالفقراء والقرب من الضعفاء ومجاهدة النفس. وتدور مواعظه حول التحذير من الكبر والرياء وطلب الشهرة والدعوى الروحية الباطلة.
ومن أبرز ملامح صورته في الذاكرة الرفاعية صلته بالفقراء والمرضى والضعفاء ومن لا يلتفت إليهم الناس. وتصف كتب المناقب مجلسه بأنه موضع تربية للقلب والخلق والخدمة والصبر والرحمة بالخلق. ولذلك لا يذكر بوصفه صاحب مرقد فحسب، بل بوصفه مؤسس طريق روحي واسع الحضور.
وأشهر خبر مناقبي ينسب إليه يتعلق بسفره إلى المدينة المنورة. فتذكر مصادر المناقب الصوفية أنه لما حضر عند الروضة النبوية الشريفة سلم بأدب شديد وتواضع بالغ. ثم تروي بعض الروايات الصوفية المتأخرة ظهور اليد الشريفة وتقبيل الشيخ أحمد الرفاعي لها.
يعرض هذا الخبر هنا بوصفه منقبة صوفية متأخرة، لا بوصفه حديثا نبويا ولا خبرا تاريخيا مبكرا مقطوعا به. وقد قبله بعض أهل العلم في دائرة الأدب الصوفي، وانتقده آخرون نقدا شديدا. فالاحتياط العلمي ألا يجعل أصلا في العقيدة، مع عدم إغفال أثره في الذاكرة الرفاعية ولغة المحبة النبوية عند أتباعه.
وتذكر الروايات أن السيد أحمد الرفاعي الكبير رحمة الله عليه توفي نحو سنة 578هـ / 1182م في أم عبيدة. ثم صار مزاره مركزا للطريقة الرفاعية، والزيارة في جنوب العراق، والمجالس الصوفية، والذاكرة المحلية، ونسبة السادة. وللزائر يذكر المرقد بالتواضع والخدمة والذكر ومحبة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وتزكية النفس. وللباحث يجمع الموضع بين السيرة والنسب وكتيب المزار والمناقب والذاكرة الصوفية والجغرافيا الدينية العراقية.

الأهمية التاريخية / الدينية
لهذا المرقد أهمية كبيرة في التاريخ الصوفي والنسبي والزياراتي في جنوب العراق، لأن السيد أحمد الرفاعي الكبير رحمة الله عليه لا يذكر بوصفه وليا محليا فحسب، بل بوصفه مؤسس طريق روحي واسع الانتشار. ومن خلال اسمه اتصلت أم عبيدة والرفاعي بتاريخ الطرق الصوفية في العالم الإسلامي.
ويضيف كتيب مرقد والده السيد السلطان علي في بغداد طبقة أخرى من الأهمية إلى هذا المدخل. فهو يذكر نسب الأب من جهة رفاعة الحسن المكي الهاشمي ثم يوصله بأئمة أهل البيت عليهم السلام. ومن ثم فإن هذا الكتيب مهم بوصفه شاهدا مزاريا ومحليا على الذاكرة النسبية للأسرة الرفاعية، مع الحاجة إلى مقارنته بالكتب النسبية المطبوعة.
وفي الذاكرة الرفاعية أسهم خبر المدينة المنورة المنقول، وخدمة الخلق، والتواضع، والذكر، والفقر الروحي، ومحبة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في تشكيل صورته العامة. ويعرض هذا المدخل ذلك الخبر بوصفه من مادة المناقب الصوفية المتأخرة، فيحفظ معناه الوجداني مع بقاء الاحتياط العلمي.
