Maqam of Prophet Ismail, Peace Be Upon Him, at Lake Hamrin, Diyala
IRQ-0158
Introduction
The site at Lake Hamrin in Diyala is not the grave of Prophet Ismail, Peace Be Upon Him. It is a local commemorative and devotional maqam attributed to his name. The coordinates fall in the Lake Hamrin area administered through Al-Saadiyah. The recognized religious geography of Ismail's life, Zamzam, the sacrifice narrative, and the building of the Ka'bah belongs to the Hijaz and Makkah, so Hamrin cannot be described as the original location or burial place.
An Iraqi report presents it as an old locally known maqam in Hamrin, but it does not provide early evidence for the beginning of the attribution, a founder, a prophetic visit, prayer, temporary stay, relic, or physical burial. Its connection is one of symbolic remembrance and local devotion. The building was destroyed by al-Qaeda in 2007 and later rebuilt by residents through donations; this documents modern community attachment, not an ancient grave.
A concise identity is sufficient for this secondary site: Prophet Ismail was the son of Prophet Ibrahim and Hajar, Peace Be Upon Them. The Qur'an presents the obedience and patience of father and son in the sacrifice account, and a major strand of Islamic tafsir identifies the son as Ismail. Ibrahim and Ismail later raised the foundations of the Ka'bah.
The Hamrin maqam is not a geographical copy of those Qur'anic events. It is a local place where their ethical meaning is remembered. Visitors may reflect on patience, respect for parents, surrender to Allah, migration, and service to the Sacred House. Its value becomes clearer when it is called a commemorative maqam without an unsupported claim of burial or footprint.
For researchers, the record demonstrates why evidence for a major prophetic personality must be separated from evidence for a local site. The Qur'an and tafsir support the person and events; Iraqi reporting supports the present maqam, destruction, and reconstruction; neither establishes burial at Hamrin.
Historical / Religious Importance
The maqam preserves the Qur'anic and ethical memory of Prophet Ismail within Diyala's local devotional geography, but it should not be described as his burial place. The primary religious geography of his life is Makkah and the Hijaz.
Its destruction in 2007 and reconstruction through local donations make it a modern example of a community preserving religious heritage after violence.
Its research importance lies in clearly separating the verified prophetic biography and Qur'anic narrative from the later local attribution at Hamrin.
