Encyclopaedia Iranica supports Kufa's social setting, mawali participation, siege, death in 67 AH/687 CE, and execution of supporters. The Great Mosque of Kufa page supports the present tomb identity and later rediscovery/rebuilding tradition, not an uncritical verdict on the person.
