Shrine of Sayyid Taj al-Din al-Awi, May Allah Have Mercy On Him
IRQ-0169
Introduction
The shrine of Sayyid Taj al-Din al-Awi, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, stands on the Tigris in Taj al-Din Subdistrict, formerly Al-Hafriyah, within Al-Aziziyah District of Wasit. The earlier row placed it in Al-Numaniyah, but the coordinates and Iraqi reporting support Al-Aziziyah and Taj al-Din as the normalized geography. The site is treated as his principal mausoleum and an active regional pilgrimage center.
He is remembered as Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Majd al-Din al-Awi or al-Awji. Later genealogical and shrine traditions describe him as an Aftasi Husayni Sayyid descending through Imam Zayn al-Abidin, Peace Be Upon Him. His broad Alid identity is central to the tradition, although every link in the full lineage still deserves checking against critical printed genealogies.
Taj al-Din lived at the transition between the seventh and eighth Islamic centuries in the intellectual and political world of Ilkhanid Iraq. Iraqi accounts describe him as a scholar, preacher and religious reformer connected with al-Kifl, al-Hillah, Wasit and the communities along the Tigris.
Local historical reporting states that Sultan Oljaitu Khudabanda appointed him chief naqib over the Alid notables of Iraq, Rayy, Khurasan and Fars. The same tradition connects him with court discussions alongside al-Allama al-Hilli and with the administration of the Mosque of al-Nukhaylah and the shrine of Dhu al-Kifl. These details are retained as reported Iraqi historical tradition rather than presented as uniformly attested early facts.
Historical and local narratives preserve his violent death in 711 AH together with his sons Shams al-Din and Sharaf al-Din. Some accounts connect the killing with the vizier Rashid al-Din and a dispute over access and administration at Dhu al-Kifl. The fact of an unhappy end is known in the wider historical discussion, while the precise plot and motives vary across later reports.
The present complex is set in an agricultural landscape and includes a sanctuary, decorated dome, two minarets, courtyard, guest facilities and continuing Quranic and cultural programs. Rebuilding and expansion, regular food service and large commemorative gatherings show that the mausoleum functions as a living religious and social institution.
His memory joins lineage with scholarship, preaching, public responsibility and steadfastness under pressure. The educational lesson of the site is that inherited honor is made meaningful through learning, reform and service.
For researchers, the shrine brings together Ilkhanid history, the office of naqib al-nuqaba, the religious geography of Dhu al-Kifl, the local martyrdom narrative and the modern administration of Iraqi shrines.
Historical / Religious Importance
The mausoleum preserves the memory of an Alid scholar, preacher and naqib in Ilkhanid Iraq. Its regional importance is visible in the architecture, large pilgrimages, Quranic programs and continuing service.
A second layer of importance lies in the office of Alid naqib, the religious environment of Dhu al-Kifl and the narrative of the violent death in 711 AH. Although details vary, the event is central to local memory.
The site is valuable for understanding the relationship between scholarship, reform, lineage responsibility and the modern Iraqi shrine institution.
