يقع هذا المزار في بلدة العزير على الضفة الغربية لنهر دجلة في ميسان، وينسب تقليدياً إلى دفن عزير عليه السلام الذي يعرّف غالباً بعزرا الكاتب. يذكر القرآن اسم عزير في سورة التوبة، وقد اختلف علماء المسلمين في وصفه نبياً أو عالماً صالحاً من بني إسرائيل. أما الذاكرة اليهودية فتذكر عزرا كاهناً وكاتباً ومعلماً للتوراة. ويعكس الاسم الشائع للمزار العراقي تقليداً محلياً عريقاً، لا إثباتاً أثرياً قاطعاً لهوية القبر.
يقدم سفر عزرا نسبه بوصفه من ذرية سرايا، ويرفع السلسلة عبر عزريا وحلقيا وصادوق وفينحاس وألعازار إلى هارون رئيس الكهنة عليه السلام. وهذا النسب الكتابي يجعله من البيت اللاوي الكهنوتي في بني إسرائيل. وتذكر كتب التفسير الإسلامية عزيراً عالماً بالشريعة المقدسة وحافظاً لها أو مجدداً لتعليمها، مع عدم اتفاق المصادر على صيغة واحدة لمرتبته الدينية.
يرتبط الإطار التاريخي لعزرا بالعهد الفارسي بعد السبي البابلي. ويربطه السفر الكتابي بالقدوم من بابل إلى بيت المقدس وتعليم الشريعة وتنظيم الحياة الدينية للجماعة. ومنحته الذاكرة اليهودية اللاحقة مكانة علمية استثنائية بسبب دوره في نقل التوراة وشرحها. كما تربط الكتابات الإسلامية عزيراً بتجديد المعرفة الدينية بعد الخراب والتشرد.
تصف سورة البقرة مسافراً غير مسمى مر بقرية خاوية وتسأل كيف يحييها الله بعد موتها. فأماته الله مائة عام ثم بعثه. والآية القرآنية لا تسمي الرجل. وقد عرّفه كثير من المفسرين الأوائل بعزير، بينما سمت روايات تفسيرية أخرى إرميا أو أبقت الشخصية غير معينة.
وتذكر الآية أن طعام الرجل وشرابه لم يتغيرا، وأن عظام حماره رفعت وجمعت ثم كسيت لحماً أمامه. وكانت العلامة برهاناً على قدرة الله على إحياء الموتى. فلما تبين له الأمر أقر بأن الله على كل شيء قدير. وهذا الدرس القرآني ثابت، أما تعيين المسافر بعزير فهو تفسير للآية لا نص اسم فيها.
وتضيف روايات تفسيرية متأخرة أنه حين عاد وجد الأجيال قد تغيرت فلم يعرفه الناس سريعاً. وتذكر بعض القصص امرأة مسنة عادت إليها الرؤية بدعائه فعرفته، كما عرفه أهل بيته بعلامة في جسده. وهذه التفاصيل من القصص التفسيري المتأخر، وتحفظ بوصفها تقليداً دينياً منقولاً لا سيرة مستقلة موثقة.
تربط التقاليد اليهودية والإسلامية عزرا أو عزيراً بحفظ التوراة وتجديد تعليمها بعد الاضطراب. وتؤكد المصادر اليهودية علمه الكهنوتي وتعليمه للشريعة. ورأى كثير من علماء المسلمين أنه نبي، بينما وصفه آخرون بحذر أكبر بأنه عالم صالح من بني إسرائيل. والنقطة المشتركة هي صلته بالعلم المقدس والإصلاح والتجديد.
خدم الموقع العراقي قروناً طويلة مكاناً للزيارة والعبادة لدى اليهود والمسلمين. ويذكر مشروع تراثي حديث لشبكة نهرين في جامعة لندن أن تقليد المزار وبنيته الأساسية يرجعان تقريباً إلى القرن الحادي عشر الميلادي، وأن الموضع يعتقد أنه مدفن عزرا. ولا يذكر الكتاب المقدس مكان وفاة عزرا أو دفنه، ولذلك تبقى القبور العراقية نسبة دينية قديمة لا مدفناً مثبتاً تاريخياً.
يضم المجمع المسور الحالي المزار ذا القبة الزرقاء، ومدرسة أو فضاء للعبادة، وجزءاً باقياً من خان عثماني. وقد وثق الباحثون تسع ألواح ونقوش عبرية داخل المجمع، إلى جانب نقوش إسلامية وطبقات معمارية متأخرة. وأعدت جامعات عراقية وهيئات للآثار والتراث وشركاء دوليون مسوحات هندسية وسجلات مصورة ودراسات حفظ ونماذج ثلاثية الأبعاد.
يجمع المزار للزائر معاني الإيمان بالبعث، واحترام العلم المقدس، وذاكرة الحياة اليهودية العراقية، والتعبد الإسلامي، وضرورة حماية التراث المهدد. ولا تتوقف قيمته على الجزم بأن عزرا التاريخي مدفون تحت البناء. والفهم المسؤول يحفظ التقليد المحلي القديم ويفصل بوضوح بين التعبد والنص المقدس والتفسير المتأخر والدليل الأثري.

تنبع الأهمية التاريخية لمرقد العزير من كونه موضع زيارة عراقياً قديماً مرتبطاً بعزير، وشاهداً باقياً على تداخل التراث الإسلامي واليهودي العراقي. وقد ورد اسم عزير في القرآن، غير أن تعيين الرجل غير المسمى في آية البقرة ٢٥٩، وكذلك القول بنبوته، مختلف فيهما في التفسير القديم. ولذلك تقوم قيمة الموضع على قوة الذاكرة التعبدية مع ضرورة التمييز بين درجات المصادر.
