آرامگاه حبیب بن مظاهر اسدی، خدا از او خشنود باشد، در ضریحی مستقل درون صحن حرم امام حسین بن علی در کربلا قرار دارد. این مدخل، پرونده اصلی دفن شناخته‌شده و یادمان حبیب است و مقام ثانوی نیست. منابع تاریخی نخستین او را بزرگ محترم کوفه از بنی‌اسد، پشتیبان برجسته امام حسین و از شهیدانی می‌شناسند که در دهم محرم سال ۶۱ هجری، برابر با ۶۸۰ میلادی، همراه او کشته شدند. نام او در نسخه‌ها به صورت‌های گوناگون، بیشتر حبیب بن مظاهر و حبیب بن مظهر، و با اختلاف‌های نوشتاری دیگر آمده است. منابع شرح‌حال متأخر می‌گویند که او روزگار پیامبر محمد، درود و سلام خدا بر او باد، را درک کرده بود و برخی سنت‌ها بر همین اساس او را صحابی نامیده‌اند. با این حال کتاب‌های فنی نخستین در این طبقه‌بندی یکسان نیستند. متن این احتیاط را حفظ می‌کند، ولی دسته عمومی این زیارتگاه را بر پایه طبقه‌بندی شناخته‌شده آن در شمار صحابه قرار می‌دهد. حبیب از بنی‌اسد و از بزرگان کوفه بود که پس از مرگ معاویه از امام حسین پشتیبانی کردند. گزارش‌های دعوت کوفه او را در میان کسانی قرار می‌دهند که نامه نوشتند یا برای گردآوری حمایت فعالیت کردند. فهرست کهن منسوب به فضیل بن زبیر به‌صراحت می‌گوید که حبیب برای امام حسین بیعت می‌گرفت؛ بنابراین نقش او تنها همدلی نبود، بلکه فعالیتی عملی و سازمان‌یافته بود. مأموریت مسلم بن عقیل، خدا از او خشنود باشد، نشان داد که وضع سیاسی کوفه زیر فشار و سرکوب چه اندازه سریع دگرگون شد. هنگامی که حمایت عمومی فروپاشید، حبیب شکستن پیمان را نپذیرفت. روایت‌های تاریخی خروج او از کوفه و رسیدنش به اردوگاه امام حسین در کربلا را حفظ کرده‌اند. تصمیم او نمونه وفاداری در زمانی است که وفادار ماندن خطری شخصی شده بود. حبیب در کربلا از بزرگان و افراد باتجربه اردوگاه کوچک بود. گزارش‌های نخستین و متأخر فرماندهی جناح چپ را در روز نبرد به او نسبت می‌دهند. نام او در خبرهای مشورت، دلگرم‌کردن یاران و کوشش برای جلب یاری بنی‌اسد نیز آمده است. چون جزئیات روایت‌ها یکسان نیست، هیچ گفت‌وگوی نمایشی ساختگی یا عدد نامطمئنی به متن افزوده نشده است. حبیب در دهم محرم سال ۶۱ هجری در دفاع از امام حسین و اردوگاه اهل بیت جنگید تا به شهادت رسید. منابع نخستین بر حضور و کشته‌شدن او اتفاق دارند، هرچند در ضبط برخی نام‌ها، تعیین قاتل در بعضی نقل‌ها و اعداد مربوط به سن یا کارزار اختلاف دیده می‌شود. هسته مطمئن تاریخی، پیمان او، رسیدن به کربلا، فرماندهی، دفاع و شهادت است. قبر حبیب درون مجموعه حرم امام حسین با ضریحی جداگانه محصور است و از دیرباز یکی از برجسته‌ترین قبرهای انفرادی مرتبط با شهدای کربلا شناخته شده است. منابع رسمی آستان وجود ضریح و کارهای نگهداری و جایگزینی آن در دوره جدید را ثبت کرده‌اند. جایگاه فیزیکی قبر، یاد او را بخشی از جغرافیای زیارتی زنده‌ای می‌سازد که زائران از راه آن با تاریخ کربلا روبه‌رو می‌شوند. زندگی او بدون آرایه‌پردازی ساختگی درسی روشن دارد: پیمان هنگامی آزموده می‌شود که وفاداری زیان بیاورد نه سود. امتیاز حبیب در این بود که پس از عقب‌نشینی دیگران اقدام کرد، از خانواده‌ای تهدیدشده دفاع نمود و در کنار امام حسین پایدار ماند. آرامگاه او نماد وفاداری، شجاعت اخلاقی، مقاومت در برابر ستم و فداکاری جمعی یاران کربلاست.
