परिचय

बग़दाद के करख़ क्षेत्र में शैख़ मारूफ़ क़ब्रिस्तान के भीतर स्थित यह ईंटों का मक़बरा आधुनिक स्थापत्य और ऐतिहासिक शोध में अधिकतर ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून से संबद्ध माना जाता है। वह अब्बासी ख़लीफ़ा अल-मुस्तज़ी की सहचरी और ख़लीफ़ा अल-नासिर ली-दीनिल्लाह की माता थीं। उनका जीवन उस दौर में था जब अब्बासी दरबार बग़दाद में अपना सार्वजनिक और धार्मिक प्रभाव फिर से मज़बूत कर रहा था। इमारत को सामान्यतः बारहवीं सदी के अंत या तेरहवीं सदी के आरम्भ का माना जाता है। ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून का महत्व केवल दो ख़लीफ़ाओं से संबंध के कारण नहीं है। उनका नाम वक़्फ़, शिक्षण संस्थाओं, पानी की सुविधाओं और परोपकारी संरक्षण से भी जुड़ा है। दरबार की प्रभावशाली महिलाएँ अपने संसाधनों को धार्मिक और सार्वजनिक कार्यों में लगा सकती थीं। इसलिए यह मक़बरा बाद के अब्बासी बग़दाद में महिलाओं की सक्रिय भूमिका का भौतिक प्रमाण है। उनकी जीवनी की कुछ बाद की सूचनाओं में सावधानी आवश्यक है, पर अल-नासिर की माता और प्रमुख संरक्षिका के रूप में उनकी पहचान समर्थित है। स्थापत्य की दृष्टि से यह बग़दाद की मध्यकालीन धरोहरों में अत्यंत विशिष्ट है। अष्टकोणीय दफ़्न कक्ष के ऊपर मुक़रनस की क्रमिक परतों से बना ऊँचा शंक्वाकार गुम्बद उठता है। छोटे छिद्र भीतर प्रकाश पहुँचाते हैं और नमूनेदार ईंटकारी बाहरी भाग को शक्ति तथा सजावट दोनों देती है। दीवारों से ऊपर उठते शंकु तक का परिवर्तन केवल अलंकरण नहीं, बल्कि बुद्धिमत्तापूर्ण संरचनात्मक समाधान है। इसी कारण यह इराक़ में मुक़रनस गुम्बदों और क्षेत्र के बहुकोणीय मक़बरों के अध्ययन में महत्वपूर्ण है। यह मक़बरा अंतिम अब्बासी काल के बग़दाद के शहरी दृश्य का एक अंश भी बचाए हुए है। क़ब्रिस्तान का परिवेश, समीप की धार्मिक इमारतें और लगातार होने वाली ज़ियारत दरबारी संरक्षण को सामान्य धार्मिक जीवन से जोड़ती हैं। मरम्मतों और बाद के निर्माणों ने परिसर के कुछ हिस्से बदल दिए, फिर भी मुख्य ईंटों का मक़बरा उस नगर का दुर्लभ साक्ष्य है जिसकी मध्यकालीन इमारतें युद्ध, बाढ़, पुनर्निर्माण और आधुनिक दबाव से बार-बार प्रभावित हुईं। इसका संरक्षण बग़दाद की स्थापत्य स्मृति के लिए आवश्यक है। लंबे समय तक इसे सित्ता ज़ुबैदा का मक़बरा कहा जाता था, अर्थात हारून अल-रशीद की प्रसिद्ध पत्नी ज़ुबैदा बिन्त जाफ़र की क़ब्र। आधुनिक विद्वानों ने कालक्रम, स्थापत्य शैली, अभिलेखों और ज़ुबैदा की वास्तविक क़ब्र के बताए गए स्थान की तुलना की और ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून की पहचान को अधिक सम्भावित माना। बीसवीं सदी के शोध ने धीरे-धीरे विद्वत मत को बदला। पुराना नाम लोक स्मृति के प्रमाण के रूप में महत्वपूर्ण है, पर उसे दफ़्न व्यक्ति की स्थापित पहचान नहीं कहा जाना चाहिए। यह स्मारक दो जुड़े हुए पाठ देता है। पहला यह कि इस्लामी नगरों के इतिहास में महिलाओं का परोपकारी और स्थापत्य संरक्षण वास्तविक तथा प्रभावशाली था, भले ही राजनीतिक इतिहास में उसका उल्लेख कम हो। दूसरा यह कि किसी पवित्र या ऐतिहासिक स्थान का सम्मान नामों और तिथियों की सावधानीपूर्वक जाँच भी चाहता है। ज़ुबैदा वाली पुरानी परम्परा को ऐतिहासिक स्मृति के रूप में सुरक्षित रखते हुए मक़बरे को ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून से जोड़ना जीवित परम्परा और शोध दोनों को संतुलित ढंग से समझने में सहायता करता है।

ऐतिहासिक / धार्मिक महत्व

ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून का मक़बरा अंतिम अब्बासी बग़दाद की सबसे मूल्यवान बची हुई धरोहरों में है। उसका अष्टकोणीय कक्ष और ऊँचा, परतदार मुक़रनस शंकु इस्लामी दफ़्न स्थापत्य के इतिहास में प्रमुख तुलनात्मक उदाहरण है। मध्यकालीन बग़दाद की बहुत कम इमारतें बची हैं, इसलिए इसका महत्व स्थानीय क़ब्रिस्तान से कहीं आगे जाता है। ज़ुमुर्रुद ख़ातून से इसका संबंध अब्बासी दरबार में महिलाओं द्वारा वक़्फ़, शिक्षा और नगर सेवाओं के संरक्षण को भी सामने लाता है। ईंट और वास्तु स्थान के रूप में यह इमारत बिखरे हुए लिखित इतिहास को देखने योग्य बना देती है। सित्ता ज़ुबैदा वाली पुरानी पहचान का संशोधन भी ऐतिहासिक रूप से महत्वपूर्ण है। इससे दिखता है कि पुरातत्व, स्थापत्य कालक्रम और आलोचनात्मक अध्ययन किसी प्रिय लोक परम्परा को मिटाए बिना अधिक सही कर सकते हैं। इसलिए यह क्षेत्रीय महत्व का स्थल है और लगातार संरक्षण तथा सावधान व्याख्या का अधिकारी है।
