Introduction
The shrine in Bani Mansur and Al-Hawsh al-Shamali, within Al-Sadiq District in northern Basra, is locally famous as the shrine of Ahmad ibn Ali. Independent biographical and genealogical checking identifies the historical figure more precisely as Sayyid Abu Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Isa ibn Zayd ibn Ali, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, also known as Ahmad al-Mukhtafi. Despite concealment, he was remembered as a learned and distinguished member of the Prophet's family. Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani describes him as learned, virtuous and advanced among his relatives, and al-Dhahabi calls him the elder and leading figure of Banu Hashim. He transmitted hadith, studied legal questions and became associated with the Zaydi scholarly tradition. Reports and legal teachings connected with him were preserved by students and later gathered in works associated with Muhammad ibn Mansur al-Muradi.
His documented Zaydi affiliation is a biographical school identity, not a reason for sectarian argument. His value for the atlas lies in scholarship, patience, integrity and the preservation of Alid learning during a period of political danger. The sources also show the importance of distinguishing a person's historical religious affiliation from the later devotional communities that visit a shrine.
Al-Dhahabi records that Ahmad remained quietly in Basra among the Azd until his death in 247 AH, after a life of approximately eighty-nine years. Some reports differ over the exact circumstances of his death, and stronger poisoning or martyrdom details are not presented as settled fact. The secure conclusion is that he died in Basra after a long hidden life.
The present shrine remains an active religious centre. The name Ahmad ibn Ali remains deeply rooted in current usage, while shrine media also preserve the fuller identity Ahmad ibn Isa ibn Zayd.
