परिचय
अल-मुख़्तार इब्न अबी उबैद अल-सक़फ़ी की मान्य क़ब्र कूफ़ा की महान मस्जिद के मज़ार परिसर में, मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील अलैहिस्सलाम और हानी इब्न उरवा रहमतुल्लाह अलैह के मज़ारों के निकट स्थित है। यह उनके जीवन, आंदोलन और दफ़न का मुख्य अभिलेख है। मस्जिद में क़ब्र की उपस्थिति उनके बारे में गहरे ऐतिहासिक मतभेदों को समाप्त नहीं करती।
मुख़्तार क़बीला सक़ीफ़ से थे और अबू उबैद इब्न मसऊद के पुत्र थे; उनके पिता जसर की लड़ाई में मारे गए। वे कूफ़ा के उस राजनीतिक वातावरण में बड़े हुए जहाँ करबला के बाद शोक, पछतावा, क़बीलाई प्रतिस्पर्धा, उमय्यद सत्ता, ज़ुबैरी शासन और अहल अल-बैत अलैहिमुस्सलाम के समर्थकों की आशाएँ आपस में टकरा रही थीं।
मुख़्तार का नाम मुख्यतः उस आंदोलन से जुड़ा है जिसने छियासठ हिजरी में कूफ़ा पर अधिकार किया और इमाम हुसैन अलैहिस्सलाम के ख़ून का बदला लेने का नारा उठाया। उन्होंने अपने आंदोलन को मुहम्मद इब्न अल-हनफ़िय्या के नाम से जोड़ा और उनके समर्थकों ने करबला में भाग लेने वाले कई व्यक्तियों के विरुद्ध कार्रवाई की। इब्राहीम इब्न मालिक अल-अश्तर की सेना ने ख़ाज़िर की लड़ाई में उबैदुल्लाह इब्न ज़ियाद को पराजित कर मार डाला।
यह आंदोलन केवल राजनीतिक प्रतिशोध नहीं था। मुख़्तार की सेना और शासन में मवाली तथा गैर-अरब समूहों की भागीदारी ने कूफ़ा के अरब क़बीलाई अशराफ़ की पारंपरिक श्रेष्ठता को चुनौती दी। इस कारण कुछ आधुनिक इतिहासकार इसे इराक़ के सामाजिक संतुलन में परिवर्तन का महत्वपूर्ण चरण मानते हैं, जबकि उनके तत्कालीन विरोधी इसे अपनी क़बीलाई और राजनीतिक शक्ति के लिए ख़तरा समझते थे।
अहल अल-बैत अलैहिमुस्सलाम से मुख़्तार के संबंध पर स्रोत एकमत नहीं हैं। कुछ शिया परंपराएँ करबला के हत्यारों के सिर भेजे जाने और हाशिमी परिवार के शोक में राहत का उल्लेख करती हैं तथा उनके कार्य को सकारात्मक देखती हैं। अन्य शिया रिवायतें उनके दावों और राजनीतिक तरीक़ों की आलोचना करती हैं। इसलिए उन्हें त्रुटिहीन नायक बनाना भी सही नहीं और करबला के अपराधियों के विरुद्ध उनकी वास्तविक भूमिका को नकारना भी उचित नहीं।
सुन्नी हदीस स्रोतों में सहीह मुस्लिम और जामे तिर्मिज़ी सक़ीफ़ के एक झूठे और एक विनाशकारी व्यक्ति की रिवायत सुरक्षित रखते हैं। सहीह मुस्लिम के मूल संवाद में पहले व्यक्ति का नाम नहीं आता; बाद के अनेक विद्वानों ने झूठे व्यक्ति को मुख़्तार और विनाशकारी को हज्जाज पर लागू किया।
कुछ विवरण मुख़्तार पर ग़ैब की विशेष जानकारी, प्रेरणा या वह्य जैसी भाषा का दावा करने का आरोप लगाते हैं। तफ़सीर इब्न कसीर ऐसे दावे और इब्न उमर या इब्न अब्बास से जुड़ा उत्तर सुरक्षित रखती है। सावधान लेखन इन्हें रिवायत, आरोप और विद्वानों की व्याख्या के रूप में रखता है, क्योंकि इतिहासकार इस पर एकमत नहीं कि मुख़्तार ने साफ़ शब्दों में पैग़म्बरी का दावा किया था।
मुहम्मद इब्न अल-हनफ़िय्या के नाम ने मुख़्तार को धार्मिक और भावनात्मक समर्थन दिया, किंतु यही संबंध विवाद का केंद्र बना। समर्थकों ने इसे अलवी ख़ून का बदला लेने की प्रतिनिधि सत्ता माना, जबकि विरोधियों ने पवित्र नाम का राजनीतिक उपयोग कहा। यह द्वंद्व उन्हें आरंभिक शिया राजनीतिक विचार और कैसानिया के विकास में महत्वपूर्ण बनाता है।
सड़सठ हिजरी में मुसअब इब्न अल-ज़ुबैर ने बसरा की सेना के साथ कूफ़ा को घेर लिया। साथियों के कमज़ोर पड़ने के बाद मुख़्तार लड़ते हुए मारे गए और बाद में उनके बहुत से समर्थक भी मारे गए। राजनीतिक युद्ध और गंभीर मतभेद के कारण स्रोत उनकी मृत्यु के लिए अलग-अलग भाषा और निर्णय रखते हैं।
मस्जिद कूफ़ा का यह मज़ार ज़ायर और शोधकर्ता को करबला के प्रतिशोध, कूफ़ा के पछतावे, मवाली के उभार, ज़ुबैरी और उमय्यद संघर्ष तथा राजनीति में धार्मिक भाषा के उपयोग से परिचित कराता है। इसका मुख्य पाठ भावना, राजनीतिक दावा, हदीसी रिवायत और ऐतिहासिक आलोचना को अलग-अलग समझना है।
मस्जिद कूफ़ा के दूसरे स्मारकों के निकट यह क़ब्र मुख़्तार को उसी भूगोल में रखती है जहाँ करबला से पहले और बाद की अनेक घटनाएँ घटीं। ज़ायर मुस्लिम इब्न अक़ील, हानी इब्न उरवा और मुख़्तार के मज़ारों के बीच तीन अलग चरण देख सकता है: प्रतिनिधित्व और दावत, शरण तथा वफ़ादारी, और फिर अपराधियों को दंड देने का आंदोलन। यह निकटता पूरे परिसर के ऐतिहासिक अर्थ को गहरा करती है, यद्यपि मुख़्तार के तरीक़ों और दावों पर निर्णय करते समय विभिन्न स्रोतों को साथ पढ़ना आवश्यक है।

मस्जिद कूफ़ा में मुख़्तार का मज़ार करबला के बाद इराक़ के राजनीतिक और सामाजिक इतिहास को समझने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है। उनका नाम करबला के अपराधियों के विरुद्ध कार्रवाई, कूफ़ा के पछतावे, मवाली के उभार और उमय्यद तथा ज़ुबैरी संघर्ष से जुड़ा है।
स्रोत उनके बारे में अलग-अलग निर्णय सुरक्षित रखते हैं। कुछ परंपराएँ उनके प्रतिशोध और अहल अल-बैत अलैहिमुस्सलाम के उद्देश्य के समर्थन पर बल देती हैं, जबकि हदीस और इतिहास स्रोत उनके कुछ दावों और राजनीतिक तरीक़ों की कड़ी आलोचना करते हैं। यह मतभेद स्वयं उनके ऐतिहासिक महत्व का भाग है।
