Cairo

Cairo is Egypt’s capital and one of the major historic cities of the Islamic world. UNESCO describes Historic Cairo as an urban landscape that incorporates earlier centres such as Fustat, Al-Askar and Al-Qata’i, while the foundation of Fatimid Cairo in the tenth century became a decisive stage in the city’s development. Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman rule then expanded its religious, scholarly and architectural landscape. Al-Azhar, founded as a mosque in the Fatimid period, later became a globally influential centre of Sunni religious learning and remains central to Cairo’s intellectual identity.

This city page allows readers to explore mosques, madrasas, shrines, scholars and historic neighbourhoods together with a map. Modern Cairo, the UNESCO Historic Cairo property, Fustat and the wider governorate should not be treated as identical boundaries. A specific shrine attribution or building date should be stated only where reliable sources support it. Cairo’s layered urban history places institutions from different periods close together, so careful distinction between location, dynasty, chronology and religious tradition is essential when interpreting individual records.
