Acceptance and Scope
Using the website means agreeing to these public rules.
By accessing or using the website, its maps, search, shrine records, downloadable material or submission forms, you agree to follow these Terms of Use together with the Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, Community Contribution Policy and other displayed policies.
If you do not agree, you should not submit material or use restricted interactive features. Ordinary public reading remains subject to applicable law and the limits stated in the Disclaimer.
Permitted Use
The atlas is intended for learning, research, heritage documentation and responsible visitation.
- Read, search and share links to public pages for personal, educational, scholarly or non-commercial use.
- Quote limited passages with a clear citation to the page, language version and access date.
- Use published coordinates as a starting point for research or navigation while independently checking current conditions.
- Submit evidence-based corrections, photographs, references and local observations through the designated channels.
- Contact the project about academic collaboration, data questions, accessibility, rights or technical problems.
Large-scale copying, republication, commercial reuse, data extraction or redistribution may require written permission and separate terms, especially where third-party rights or sensitive location data are involved.
Research Content and Citations
Public access does not erase authorship, source obligations or uncertainty labels.
Descriptions, translations, classifications, editorial notes, source arrangements, database structure and original design may be protected by copyright or database rights. Individual historical facts may not be owned, but the project’s selection, wording, translation, organization and presentation may be protected.
When citing the atlas, preserve the permanent shrine code, page title, language, URL and access date where practical. Do not remove words such as attributed, disputed, approximate or under review in a way that makes the source appear more certain than it is.
User Submissions and Permission to Use Them
Submit only material that you are entitled to provide.
You retain ownership of original material you submit. By submitting a comment, correction, photograph, source note, translation or location evidence, you give the project a non-exclusive, worldwide and royalty-free permission to store, review, reproduce, resize, format, translate, archive, display and publish that material for research, moderation, preservation and public-information purposes.
This permission allows the project to use an approved contribution without preventing you from using your own material elsewhere. It does not require the project to publish or permanently retain the submission. You remain responsible for having the necessary rights, consent and authority.
- Identify third-party authors, photographers, publishers and licences accurately.
- Do not submit private documents, confidential correspondence, identity records or personal data without lawful authority.
- Do not present generated, edited or copied material as a direct field observation.
- Tell the project if a photograph has been materially altered or if its date and location are uncertain.
Prohibited Conduct
The service must not be used to harm people, systems, research integrity or sacred places.
| Prohibited activity | Examples |
|---|---|
| Abusive or unlawful content | Threats, harassment, hate speech, sectarian abuse, defamation, illegal material or exposure of private personal data. |
| Technical misuse | Malware, credential attacks, bypassing access controls, excessive automated requests, destructive scraping or interference with server operation. |
| Research deception | Fabricated sources, false field claims, manipulated evidence, misleading coordinates or impersonation of an institution or contributor. |
| Rights violations | Uploading or republishing material without permission, removing attribution or using the service to facilitate infringement. |
| Commercial and promotional misuse | Unapproved advertising, fundraising solicitation, link spam, resale of copied records or misleading use of the project’s identity. |
Intellectual Property and Third-Party Material
Different elements of a record may have different rights holders.
Books, articles, maps, photographs, logos and linked material may belong to third parties and remain subject to their own terms. Citation or display does not transfer those rights to the project or visitor.
If you believe material infringes copyright, attribution, privacy or another right, identify the exact URL, the material concerned, your relationship to the right and a reliable way to contact you. The project may restrict material while reviewing a credible notice.
Maps, External Services and Links
External providers operate under their own terms and technical conditions.
The website may link to or embed Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, research platforms, archives, social media and other services. Your use of those services may create a direct relationship between you and the provider. Their terms, privacy rules, licences and availability apply.
Do not systematically extract or reuse third-party map tiles, imagery or data through this website in a way that violates the provider’s terms or open-data licence.
Service Availability and Changes
Features and records may change as the archive develops.
The project may add, remove, correct, redesign, limit or suspend content and features for research, safety, legal, moderation, performance or maintenance reasons. There is no promise that every page, language, download, image, API or interactive tool will remain continuously available.
A saved link, QR code or external reference may later redirect, change or become unavailable. Reasonable efforts may be made to preserve permanent public shrine URLs.
Moderation and Restricted Access
Interactive access may be limited when necessary to protect the service.
The project may reject, edit, hide, archive or remove a submission that is irrelevant, unsafe, unlawful, abusive, deceptive, duplicative or unsupported. Automated protections may rate-limit or block repeated activity.
Access to submission or administrative features may be restricted where there is suspected misuse. A moderation decision does not create an obligation to enter into extended correspondence.
Responsibility and Applicable Law
Users remain responsible for their conduct, submissions and independent decisions.
You are responsible for complying with the law applicable to your location, activity and submitted material. You are also responsible for independently checking travel, access, safety and source accuracy before acting on information.
These terms are interpreted under the laws that apply to the project operator and the relevant use of the service. Nothing in them limits a right or responsibility that cannot legally be limited. Jurisdiction-specific operator details may be added when the final legal identity and domain are confirmed.
Changes and Contact
Material changes should be published transparently.
The terms may be updated when the website adds uploads, accounts, email notifications, analytics, APIs, open-data services or other features. Continued use after a published revision means that future use is subject to the revised terms.
Questions about permission, reuse, copyright, moderation or these terms can be sent through the Contact and Feedback page.
