Qom

Qom is the capital of Qom Province in central Iran and one of the country’s best-known religious and scholarly cities. Historical research traces settlement in the area to pre-Islamic times, while the city’s Islamic-era development was strongly shaped by Arab Ash'ari settlement, urban consolidation, and the growth of religious institutions. The death and burial in Qom of Fatima Masumeh, sister of Imam Ali al-Rida, became especially important for the city’s later pilgrimage identity; her burial place developed over time into a major shrine complex. Qom also became a prominent center of Shi'i learning and religious education in later centuries.
