Al-Hilla

Al-Hilla is the capital of Babylon Governorate in central Iraq and stands on a branch of the Euphrates. Its distinct Islamic urban history is closely linked to the Mazyadid period around the turn of the twelfth century, when a new political and administrative center was established here. In subsequent centuries Hilla developed a reputation for commerce, literature, and religious scholarship. It became especially important in the history of Twelver Shi‘i learning through the scholarly tradition often described as the school of al-Hilla. The city also lies close to the archaeological remains of ancient Babylon, but Islamic Hilla and the ancient Babylonian city should not be treated as the same historical settlement.
