Nasiriyah

Nasiriyah is the administrative centre of Dhi Qar Governorate in southern Iraq, on the Euphrates. A British historical record describes it as a comparatively modern town founded under Nasir Pasha in the late Ottoman period and as an important centre of trade. Research published by the University of Thi-Qar also shows that twentieth-century Nasiriyah became a setting for religious and reformist journalism, including the magazine Al-Tadamun al-Islami. The city should therefore be understood as a modern Iraqi urban and intellectual centre, distinct from the much older archaeological landscapes found elsewhere in Dhi Qar.
