Kirkuk

Kirkuk is the central city of Kirkuk Governorate in northern Iraq, with an urban history extending across several ancient and later periods. At its heart, Kirkuk Citadel remains a major marker of the old city; UNESCO’s Tentative List describes it as one of the oldest parts of the urban settlement. The citadel preserves traces of residential quarters, places of worship, heritage buildings, and elements associated with later Ottoman administration, showing that Kirkuk’s identity cannot be reduced to a single era or religious tradition. For Islamic history, it is therefore important to distinguish older pre-Islamic and Christian layers from later Muslim and Ottoman urban developments rather than merging them into one continuous claim.
