Al-Maimouna

Al-Maimouna is a district centre in Maysan Governorate whose present urban form developed in the mid-twentieth century. A local heritage account describes an earlier settlement nearby and the later move to the current site, while the district’s geography is closely tied to branches of the Tigris, agricultural land and the watery landscape of southern Maysan. Iraqi official gazettes also record archaeological sites in parts of Al-Maimouna District, showing that the area’s historical geography extends beyond the built-up town itself.
