Al-Yafi'i preserves a classical account about Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, may Allah have mercy on him, and a woman who entrusted her spiritually inclined son to his training. When she later found the young man weakened by hunger and night worship, eating barley bread, she objected after seeing the bones of an eaten chicken before the Shaykh. The report says the Shaykh placed his hand on the bones and addressed the chicken to rise by Allah's permission, whereupon it stood up whole and cried out. Ibn Hajar al-Haytami later cites the same revival report in his discussion of the Shaykh.

Saintly karamah
The Qur'an identifies the awliya of Allah as believers who remain mindful of Him, and Sahih al-Bukhari preserves the central hadith qudsi on Allah's wali, nearness through obligatory and voluntary deeds, divine love, protection, and answered request. Authentic hadith also preserves concrete extraordinary examples involving righteous believers, including guiding light, unexpected provision, non-prophetic inspired insight, and providential rain. Classical Sunni and Sufi works affirm the possibility of karamat al-awliya. A later Sirr al-Asrar catalogue attributes additional motifs such as walking on water, extraordinary travel, distant hearing, and perception of concealed bodily matters, but those specific motifs are not all equally authenticated.

Al-Lalaka'i preserves a report about a Kharijite who repeatedly entered the gathering of Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, and troubled those present. Hasan did not seek the ruler's intervention. When the man appeared again, Hasan prayed that Allah would suffice them against his harm however He willed. The report then says that the man collapsed where he stood and was carried to his family dead. It also preserves that Hasan later wept when remembering him.

Early Sunni sources preserve a report that Amir ibn Abd Qays, may Allah have mercy on him, received his regular stipend and carried it home in the edge of his garment. Along the way, poor people approached him and he kept giving to them from the same money. When he reached his household, the remaining amount was counted. The report says that it was found equal to the amount he had originally received.

Al-Lalaka'i preserves a report about Mutarrif ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Shikhkhir, may Allah have mercy on him, and a man from his people who lied about him during a dispute. Mutarrif made a conditional prayer that if the man was lying, Allah hasten his death, and the report says that the man then died on the spot. When the man's family complained to Ziyad, they acknowledged that Mutarrif had neither struck nor touched him. Ziyad is then reported to have described the event as the prayer of a righteous man coinciding with divine decree.

Ibn Abi al-Dunya preserves a report that al-Hajjaj imprisoned Muwarriq al-Ijli and that efforts to obtain his release had not succeeded. Mutarrif ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Shikhkhir, may Allah have mercy on him, then called those present to supplicate to Allah; Mutarrif prayed while the others said amin. The report says that the same evening Muwarriq’s father entered al-Hajjaj’s gathering, and al-Hajjaj ordered a guard to go with him to the prison and hand his son over to him. Al-Lalaka'i and Abu Nu'aym also preserve later forms of the same episode.

Classical sources preserve several related reports about Mutarrif ibn Abd Allah, may Allah have mercy on him, travelling in darkness when an unusual light appeared at his whip. Ibn Sa'd records that before dawn, while Mutarrif was going to Friday prayer with his son Abd Allah behind him, a two-branched light shone from the head of his whip. Ahmad ibn Hanbal preserves another form in which a lamp-like light appeared on the whip tip during a dark night. Al-Bayhaqi and al-Lalaka'i also preserve a version in which one traveller's whip tip had light.

Early Sunni sources preserve a report that during an expedition toward Kabul, Sila ibn Ashyam, may Allah have mercy on him, lost the mule carrying his baggage while the army was moving near enemy territory. He asked for enough time to pray two light rak'ahs, then supplicated to Allah for the return of his mule and its load. The report says that the mule then came back and stood before him with the baggage.

Early Sunni sources preserve an account of Sila ibn Ashyam, may Allah have mercy on him, suffering severe hunger during a journey and turning to Allah for food. The reports then describe him unexpectedly finding fresh dates and eating until he was satisfied. One version adds that fresh dates were not available in the land at that time. Another transmitted version later adds the episode of a monk and palm trees said to have grown from dates Sila had given him.

Classical sources preserve a report about Abd Allah ibn Ghalib, may Allah have mercy on him, after his death and burial following the fighting at Yawm al-Zawiya. Malik ibn Dinar is reported to have visited the grave, taken some of its soil and found it like musk. Abu Nu'aym also preserves a local report that people took soil from the grave and described it as though it were musk, keeping some of it in their clothing. Al-Lalaka'i further reports that people became preoccupied with the grave soil and that the grave was later leveled.

An early report preserved by al-Fakihi states that Habib Abu Muhammad al-Ajami, may Allah have mercy on him, was seen in Basra on Yawm al-Tarwiya and then seen at Arafat on the evening of Arafah. Abu Nu'aym and al-Lalaka'i also preserve the same basic report in later classical works. The wording is brief and simply records the two sightings without explaining how the journey occurred. The story is therefore best told exactly in that simple sequence.

Ibn Abi al-Dunya preserves a report about a neighboring boy who had remained bald until about twelve years of age. His father brought him to Habib al-Ajami, may Allah have mercy on him, and asked him to pray for the boy. The report says that Habib wept, prayed, and wiped the boy’s head with his tears. Before the boy left, the roots of hair were said to have darkened, and later his hair continued to grow. A named witness is also reported to have seen the boy both before and after.
