The Companions of the Elephant: A Mighty Plot Broken Before the Sacred House

Surah al-Fil recalls how Allah dealt with the Companions of the Elephant: He frustrated their plot, sent against them birds in flocks carrying stones of sijjil, and left the attacking force like eaten straw. Classical tafsir identifies the army as a force from Yemen led by Abraha that intended to destroy the Ka‘ba. Ibn Kathir preserves the famous historical setting of the march and the elephant refusing to advance toward Mecca, but these details belong to tafsir and sira, not to the wording of the surah itself. The Qur’anic center is unmistakable: overwhelming worldly power failed when Allah overturned the attackers’ plan.

Lot and His People: The Night of Rescue and the Morning of Judgment

The Qur’an presents the final episode of Prophet Lot عليه السلام as the climax of a long struggle against open corruption and rejection. After his people demanded the punishment he warned them about, divine messengers came to him in the form of guests. Lot was distressed when the townsmen rushed toward his house, but the messengers revealed that they were angels and assured him that the attackers would not reach him. He was commanded to leave by night with his household, except his wife. By morning the condemned settlement was overturned and struck with marked stones of hard clay, while Lot and the faithful were saved.

Hud and the People of ‘Aad: The Cloud They Thought Was Rain

The Qur’an tells how Hud عليه السلام called the powerful people of ‘Aad to worship Allah alone, but they rejected him, boasted of their strength, and demanded the promised punishment. When a cloud approached their valleys, they welcomed it as rain. Instead, it was a devastating wind sent by Allah, imposed for seven nights and eight days. ‘Aad were destroyed, while Hud and the believers were saved by divine mercy.
