The Qur’an presents the final episode of Prophet Lot عليه السلام as the climax of a long struggle against open corruption and rejection. After his people demanded the punishment he warned them about, divine messengers came to him in the form of guests. Lot was distressed when the townsmen rushed toward his house, but the messengers revealed that they were angels and assured him that the attackers would not reach him. He was commanded to leave by night with his household, except his wife. By morning the condemned settlement was overturned and struck with marked stones of hard clay, while Lot and the faithful were saved.
Before the punishment reached the town, divine messengers announced to Abraham عليه السلام that they had been sent against the people of Lot’s settlement because they were wrongdoers. Abraham expressed concern because Lot was there, but the messengers assured him that Lot and his household would be saved, except for his wife.
When the messengers reached Lot, he did not yet know who they were. He became deeply distressed for his guests because he knew the behavior of his people and feared what they would attempt. His fear was soon justified. The townsmen came rushing toward his house. Lot pleaded with them to fear Allah, to choose what was pure, and not to disgrace him concerning his guests. In the pressure of that moment he wished aloud that he had sufficient power against them or could take refuge in a strong support.
Then the situation changed. The guests revealed their true identity: they were messengers of Lot’s Lord. They told him that the attackers would never reach him. Another Qur’anic passage records that when the people pressed their demand for the guests, Allah obliterated their eyes, turning their aggression into helplessness.
The angels then gave Lot precise instructions. He was to leave with his household during part of the night and continue forward. His wife was excluded from the rescue and would share the punishment of the condemned people. The appointed time, the angels said, was the morning.
By dawn Lot and the faithful were away. The Qur’an describes the punishment in several powerful images: a shriek seized the people at sunrise; the settlement was turned upside down; and stones of sijjil—hard clay—were rained upon them, marked from their Lord. Another passage says that Lot’s household was rescued before dawn by a favor from Allah.
The story ends by turning destruction into warning. The Qur’an says that a clear sign was left for people who reason, and that the ruined place lay on an established road for those who would take heed. Lot’s rescue and his people’s destruction therefore form one complete message: repeated warning can be rejected for a time, but divine judgment is not prevented by public power, numbers, or defiance. Salvation came to Lot and the believers through Allah’s mercy; the morning that ended the town’s rebellion began with the faithful already beyond its reach.
Conclusion
The final episode of Lot’s people is a Qur’anic story of warning, protection and judgment: the prophet’s guests were protected, Lot and the faithful were taken out by night, and the appointed punishment came in the morning. Its enduring lesson is that Allah’s mercy rescues those who respond to truth, while persistent corruption and defiance do not become safe merely because they have become socially established.
