Hasan ibn Imam Musa al-Kazim is a sparsely documented member of the Ahl al-Bayt who appears in Imami genealogical and hadith sources as a son of Imam Musa al-Kazim. The direct Arabic text of al-Irshad lists one Husayn and one Hasan among the Imam's children, and other genealogical works likewise identify a single historical Hasan ibn Musa. The accessible early material does not provide an independent full biography, a birth or death date, or a reliable burial place. A hadith report is transmitted through him from his mother and the mother of Ahmad ibn Musa, while later genealogists discuss a small line of descendants.

Biography and historical profile

Hasan ibn Musa is counted among the children of Imam Musa ibn Jafar al-Kazim. In al-Irshad, Shaykh al-Mufid lists thirty-seven sons and daughters, placing one Husayn in one maternal group and one Hasan in another group. Al-Shajara al-Mubaraka and Umdat al-Talib likewise describe one Hasan ibn Musa. A repeated name in a later poem does not establish two separate historical sons named Hasan; the present identity is therefore Hasan ibn Musa al-Kazim without an artificial ordinal qualifier.

No independent, detailed early biography of Hasan ibn Musa is available in the sources examined. His precise birth date and birthplace are not established, and reliable information about his education, ordinary activities, or political role has not been preserved. The profile must therefore remain limited to points directly supported by genealogical lists and reports explicitly attributed to him.

Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih preserves a report through Hasan ibn Musa ibn Ja'far from his mother and the mother of Ahmad ibn Musa. It concerns advancing the Friday ritual bath to Thursday during travel when water was expected to be scarce on Friday. Some parallel hadith transmissions give the narrator's name as Husayn rather than Hasan. The report is therefore best described as an Imami transmission attributed to Hasan, not as conclusive evidence for a broad scholarly career.

Later genealogists, notably Ibn Inaba and the work attributed to Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, describe the surviving line of Hasan ibn Musa as very small and generally trace it through a son named Ja'far; some later arrangements also mention a son named Isa. These differences make the finer details of his descendants uncertain. The sources examined do not establish his death date, place of death, burial, or a reliably attributed shrine, so his burial must be recorded as unknown.

Historical importance and legacy

Hasan ibn Musa is historically significant not because a major political or scholarly biography survives, but because he represents a poorly documented member of Imam Musa al-Kazim's family within the transmission and genealogical networks of the Ahl al-Bayt. The report attributed to him illustrates how household and travel memories were carried into later Imami legal literature through members of the family.

The profile also illustrates careful source criticism. Comparison of the direct al-Irshad text with recognized genealogical works establishes one Hasan ibn Musa, while repetition in a later poetic list is not converted into a separate historical person. The securely supported hadith and genealogical material is retained, while uncertain details of birth, death, burial, and descendants remain qualified.
