Introduction
This shrine is connected with Imam Abu Sa'id al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan Yasar al-Basri, known as Hasan al-Basri, one of the most influential Tabi'i figures of early Islam. He was born in Madinah in 21 AH / 642 CE, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar ibn al-Khattab, and later became closely associated with Basra, where his knowledge, preaching, ascetic discipline, and moral counsel left a deep mark on Muslim scholarship and spirituality.
His father Yasar is remembered in the biographical tradition as a freedman who settled in Madinah, and his mother Khayrah was connected with the household of Umm Salamah, the Mother of the Believers. Because of this early Madinan environment, later Muslim memory often presents Hasan al-Basri as someone raised near the living legacy of the Companions, the Prophet’s household, Qur’anic recitation, and the disciplined adab of the first generations.
Hasan al-Basri grew up at a time when the generation of the Sahabah was still present, and reports in books of rijal and tabaqat connect him with many Companions and early transmitters. He is remembered as a preacher whose words joined knowledge with fear of Allah, repentance, sincerity, and concern for the Hereafter. Classical authors describe his gatherings as gatherings of Qur’anic reflection, legal insight, spiritual warning, and ethical reform.
In Basra he became one of the city’s great voices of learning. His students and transmitters included major Basran authorities such as Qatadah, Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, Ibn Awn, Yunus ibn Ubayd, Hisham ibn Hassan, and others. His narrations, legal opinions, sermons, and sayings appear across early hadith, tafsir, zuhd, and tabaqat literature, although scholars also carefully discussed the status of some mursal reports attributed to him.
His spiritual legacy is especially important because later Muslim ascetic and Sufi traditions saw in him an early model of inward purification, public courage, humility, and truthfulness before rulers and society. It is better to describe this role carefully: he was not merely a later legend, but a historically remembered early preacher and scholar whose words shaped the language of zuhd, accountability, and the reform of the heart.
Hasan al-Basri died in Basra in 110 AH / 728 CE. The shrine tradition in al-Zubayr district near Basra preserves his memory together with Muhammad ibn Sirin, and historical heritage descriptions note the old mausoleum structure, its distinctive tower, and its place among the sacred and scholarly landscapes of Basra. For visitors, the site is not only a grave memory but also a reminder of early Islamic learning, Qur’anic ethics, humility, and the moral seriousness of the Tabi'un.
The grave stands in a shared historic mausoleum in the old cemetery area of al-Zubayr, where the burial of Muhammad ibn Sirin is also recognized. Its conical tower is attributed to the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir around 581 AH / 1185 CE and displays Seljuk architectural features. The site is therefore not only the resting place of a major scholar but also a surviving monument of Basra's intellectual memory and medieval architecture.
Historical / Religious Importance
Hasan al-Basri gave the scholarly, ethical and spiritual inheritance of the Tabi'un a powerful voice in Basra. His preaching, asceticism, interpretation, hadith learning and moral courage before political power influenced later jurists, traditionists and spiritual teachers.
The historic mausoleum in al-Zubayr preserves his memory together with the grave of Muhammad ibn Sirin and an Abbasid-Seljuk architectural monument. It is important both to the intellectual history of Basra and to the built heritage of Iraq.
