Introduction
This local devotional site in the western outskirts of Al-Mahmudiyah District is attributed to Abdullah ibn al-Hasan al-Muthanna, known as Abdullah al-Mahd, May Allah Have Mercy On Him. It is not his securely established principal burial. Classical sources connect his final imprisonment with al-Hashimiyya near the approaches to Kufa and the Euphrates, while a widely visited Iraqi tradition also associates him with the shrine of Sayyid Abdullah Abu Najm in the al-Shinafiyah area of al-Diwaniyah. The present Al-Mahmudiyah site is a later local attribution.
Abdullah al-Mahd was the son of al-Hasan al-Muthanna ibn Imam al-Hasan, Peace Be Upon Him, and Sayyida Fatima bint Imam al-Husayn, Peace Be Upon Her. He therefore united Hasani and Husayni descent. The titles al-Mahd and al-Kamil reflect his combined Alid lineage and senior position in the family, while Abu Muhammad was his well-known kunyah.
He was counted among the leading Sayyids of Medina. His sons Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya and Ibrahim led major Alid resistance during the reign of the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur. Maqatil al-Talibiyyin, Ansab al-Ashraf, al-Tabari, Ibn Sa'd, and genealogical works preserve the background of surveillance, arrest, transfer from Medina to Iraq, imprisonment, and increasing confrontation between the Hasani family and Abbasid authority.
Al-Mansur arrested Abdullah al-Mahd and other Hasani elders. Reports differ on the precise prison, manner of death, and burial location: some place him in the prison of al-Hashimiyya near the Euphrates, some preserve a tradition that the prison was brought down upon the detainees, and later visitation memory made the al-Shinafiyah shrine widely known. The strongest shared conclusion is that he died or was killed under harsh Abbasid confinement in 145 AH.
The value of the Al-Mahmudiyah site lies in local Hasani Sayyid memory, supplication, and affection for the Ahl al-Bayt, Peace Be Upon Them. Visitors should understand that the firmly documented historical greatness of Abdullah al-Mahd, the al-Hashimiyya imprisonment traditions, the well-known Abu Najm shrine attribution, and the evidence for this specific Al-Mahmudiyah place do not stand at the same level. The row is therefore retained respectfully as a SECONDARY ATTRIBUTED PLACE with its burial attribution Under Review.

Historical / Religious Importance
This place connects the great Hasani-Husayni lineage and Abbasid imprisonment of Abdullah al-Mahd with the local devotional memory of Al-Mahmudiyah, but it is not his securely established principal burial.
The al-Hashimiyya imprisonment tradition, his death or martyrdom in 145 AH, and the widely known Abu Najm shrine tradition in the al-Shinafiyah area have stronger historical and visitation standing than this specific Al-Mahmudiyah attribution. Stating the distinction protects visitors from confusing a local maqam with a confirmed grave.
Preserving the place as a secondary attributed shrine serves both local devotion and historical honesty.
