Introduction

The shrine of Bawa Mahmoud stands on the western side of Khanaqin in Diyala and is an important landmark in the religious and social memory of the city, especially among Feyli Kurdish families. Modern local reporting places it among orchards and open land roughly ten kilometers from central Khanaqin, where visitation is also connected with family gatherings and attachment to the surrounding landscape.

The word Bawa or Baba is a regional honorific for a respected elder or sacred figure. The historical identity of Bawa Mahmoud is not settled in the available evidence. Some local Muslim traditions describe him as a descendant of Imam Musa al-Kazim, Peace Be Upon Him, while Kaka'i or Yarsani tradition identifies him within its own sacred lineage. The recognized early genealogical lists of the descendants of Imam Musa al-Kazim do not provide a clear and unanimous confirmation of a separate descendant named Mahmoud corresponding to this shrine.

For that reason, the site is presented as a well-established shrine of Khanaqin but the person’s exact genealogy and religious affiliation remain under review. The competing traditions are part of the history of the place and should be recorded respectfully without turning a local attribution into a proven early lineage.

In October 2018, a series of explosions struck the shrine and its surroundings. Contemporary Iraqi reports stated that two women were killed, seven people were injured, and the structure suffered severe damage. Local volunteers then began reconstruction, with municipal reporting noting that the first work relied on public cooperation and voluntary effort.

The shrine’s present significance lies in communal memory, Feyli cultural identity, visitation, and recovery after violence. It is valuable to visitors as a place of prayer and family connection, and to researchers as an example of how different religious memories, local heritage, terrorism, and community-led reconstruction can meet at one site.

Historical / Religious Importance

Bawa Mahmoud is historically important to Khanaqin as a living local shrine rather than as a personality whose full biography is securely preserved in classical sources. Its cultural importance comes from continued visitation, Feyli communal memory, and the coexistence of different explanations of the figure’s identity.

The 2018 attacks and subsequent volunteer reconstruction added a modern layer of significance. They made the shrine a record of violence against religious and communal spaces, and of the local population’s effort to restore a shared landmark despite limited official resources.
