Introduction

This shrine is the burial place of Haji Kaka Ahmad-i Sheikh, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, within the Grand Mosque of Sulaymaniyah. Modern biographical and academic material dates his life to 1793–1887, identifies him as a son of Shaykh Ma'ruf al-Nawdi, and presents him as a prominent Qadiri scholar, Sufi educator, and social reformer in nineteenth-century Iraqi Kurdistan.

He received his early religious formation from his father and engaged with jurisprudence, Quranic exegesis, hadith, and Sufism. Recent scholarship treats his Persian correspondence and religious writings as important evidence for his intellectual and reformist outlook, linking religious instruction with ethics, social responsibility, and service to the community.

Contemporary cultural memory and research gatherings in Sulaymaniyah emphasize his generosity, an open table for the needy, religious education for blind people, and respectful dealings across religious and social communities. These details are preserved mainly through modern scholarship and local memory and are therefore presented with that qualification.

Haji Kaka Ahmad-i Sheikh, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, died in Sulaymaniyah in 1887 and was buried in the precinct of the Grand Mosque. The mosque remains an active centre of worship, teaching, charitable meals, and visitation, and the shrine receives visitors from Kurdistan and other parts of Iraq.

Historical / Religious Importance

Haji Kaka Ahmad-i Sheikh is historically significant for combining religious scholarship, Qadiri Sufi instruction, and social reform. Modern academic study of his correspondence indicates that his activity extended beyond spiritual guidance to sustained engagement with ethics and social responsibility.

His burial within the Grand Mosque, the mosque's continuing charitable and religious functions, and the place he occupies in the historical memory of Sulaymaniyah make this a notable regional site of religious and cultural heritage.
