Karbala
Karbala is an Iraqi city southwest of Baghdad whose name is inseparable from the battle of 680, where Husayn ibn Ali, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, and members of his family and companions were killed. The event became central to Shi‘a collective memory and pilgrimage, while it also remains a major tragedy in the wider history of Islam. The city developed around the shrines associated with Husayn and his half-brother Abbas and became an important center of visitation and religious learning. UNESCO’s inscription of the service and hospitality practiced during the Arba‘in visitation also documents the continuing social and cultural importance of pilgrimage to Karbala.
This IslamicPedia city page brings together documented shrines, historical figures and map locations connected with Karbala. It does not treat every devotional tradition as an archaeological fact: the history of the 680 battle, the later development of shrine buildings and individual burial or visitation claims require different kinds of evidence. The map helps readers understand the relationship between the modern city, its major religious precincts and other records, while notes identify where a claim belongs specifically to Shi‘a tradition, later local memory or stronger historical documentation.
