Introduction

In the old city of Karbala, within Bab al-Khan and the Ibn al-Hamza Market, stands the recognized local shrine of Ali ibn Hamza ibn al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah al-Abbasi, May Allah Have Mercy On Him. Published Iraqi shrine sources present it as his burial place. The present mausoleum lies roughly five hundred metres from the Al-Abbas Shrine, near Bab Tuwayrij.

The published lineage is Ali ibn Hamza ibn al-Hasan ibn Ubayd Allah ibn al-Abbas ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib. This places him in the Abbasid Alid branch descended from al-Abbas ibn Ali, not in the Hasanid line of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba. The earlier description of the shrine as Hasanid has therefore been corrected.

Local accounts remember him as Abu Muhammad and as a respected Alid Sayyid. Detailed information about his birth, teachers and exact date of death is not widely preserved in early sources, but the genealogical framework and the longstanding public identity of the shrine distinguish the record from an anonymous tomb.

The mausoleum stands within a busy commercial quarter, and the surrounding market is itself known as Suq Ibn al-Hamza. The shrine has therefore influenced both the devotional map and the everyday urban naming of Karbala. Visitors moving beyond the two central sanctuaries encounter here the broader network of smaller Alid shrines embedded in the old city.

During Arba‘in and other pilgrimage seasons, the shrine receives visitors and participates in services for pilgrims under the supervision of the Iraqi Shiite shrine administration. Its importance lies in the meeting of lineage, proximity to the Al-Abbas sanctuary and the living communal memory of Karbala’s old quarters.

Historical / Religious Importance

The shrine of Ali ibn Hamza al-Abbasi is an important regional element in the old urban and devotional map of Karbala. It preserves the memory of descendants of al-Abbas ibn Ali near the Al-Abbas sanctuary and is embedded in the civic identity of the Ibn al-Hamza Market.

Its major research correction is genealogical: the line is Abbasid Alid, not Hasanid. The current shrine identity and administration are well established, while the limited early biography supports a Level B assessment.
