The Qur’an presents the rescue of Moses and the Children of Israel as a dramatic act of divine salvation. With the sea ahead and Pharaoh’s army behind, Moses trusted his Lord. By Allah’s command he struck the sea with his staff; it split into towering parts and a dry path opened. Moses and all those with him crossed safely, while Pharaoh and his pursuing forces were drowned.
The crisis reaches its peak when the two groups come within sight of one another. The sea is ahead and Pharaoh’s army is behind. Moses’ companions fear that they are about to be overtaken. Moses does not answer with panic. He declares with certainty: “No! My Lord is with me; He will guide me.”
Then Allah commands Moses to strike the sea with his staff. He obeys, and the Qur’an says that the sea splits apart, each separated portion appearing like a great mountain. Another passage describes a dry path made through the sea and tells Moses not to fear being overtaken or drowned. What looked like a closed barrier becomes a road of safety.
Moses and all those with him enter the opened path and cross safely. The Qur’an emphasizes that Allah saved Moses and everyone with him. Pharaoh and his soldiers continue the pursuit and enter the same passage. Moses is told to leave the sea in its opened state because the pursuing army is destined to drown. The waters then overwhelm Pharaoh’s forces.
When drowning overtakes Pharaoh, the Qur’an records that he declares belief in the God of the Children of Israel. But he is rebuked for believing only after a life of disobedience and corruption. Allah then declares that Pharaoh’s body will be preserved as a sign for those who come after him. The rescue is therefore joined to a lasting warning about arrogance, oppression and delayed repentance.
The memory of this salvation continued into the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Sahih al-Bukhari records that when he came to Medina, he was told that ‘Ashura was the day on which Allah saved Moses and drowned Pharaoh’s people, and that Moses fasted in gratitude. The Prophet ﷺ said that the Muslims were closer to Moses and observed the fast.
The story moves from fear to certainty, from a closed sea to an opened road, and from persecution to complete deliverance. Its most powerful moment comes before the miracle appears: Moses trusts that Allah will guide him, and then Allah creates a path where no human path could be seen.
Conclusion
This is one of the Qur’an’s clearest accounts of divine salvation: Moses trusted Allah when escape seemed impossible, the sea opened into a dry passage, the believers crossed safely and Pharaoh’s pursuing power was destroyed. The event remained a remembered day of gratitude and a lasting lesson in trust, deliverance and the failure of arrogance.
