The Qur’an recalls a terrifying covenant scene from the time of Moses: Allah took a firm covenant from the Children of Israel and raised the Mount above them. In Surah al-A‘raf, the mountain appeared over them like a canopy and they thought it was about to fall. At that moment they were commanded to hold firmly to the revelation given to them, remember its teachings, and live by it with reverence. Classical commentators identify the scripture in this setting as the Torah and explain “with strength” as seriousness, obedience, and committed action.
Surah al-Baqarah recalls the scene together with the covenant: Allah took their pledge, raised the Mount over them, and commanded them to hold firmly to what He had given them and to remember what was in it so that they might become mindful of Him. The emphasis is not merely on a mountain in the sky. The extraordinary sight is joined directly to a moral demand: revelation was not to be received casually, selectively, or without commitment.
Surah al-A‘raf makes the scene even more vivid. The mountain was above them “as if it were a canopy,” and they thought it was going to fall upon them. Their fear made the seriousness of the covenant visible. In that moment came the command again: take what Allah has given you with strength and remember what it contains. The purpose named by the Qur’an is spiritual—so that they might attain taqwa.
Classical exegetes explain that the scripture in this setting is the Torah. Ibn Kathir and al-Tabari describe “taking it with strength” as receiving its obligations with determination, obedience, effort, and action. In their explanations, the raised Mount becomes a severe warning against treating divine law as something that can be acknowledged with the tongue while resisted in practice.
The Qur’an later recalls the covenant again in Surah al-Baqarah 2:93: the Mount was raised above them and they were told to hold firmly to what they had been given and to listen. The verse then exposes the tragedy of covenant failure with the words, “We hear and disobey.” Surah al-Nisa also remembers the raising of the Mount in connection with a “firm covenant.”
The power of the story lies in this contrast. Above them was a mountain they feared could fall; before them was revelation they were commanded to carry faithfully. The visible danger passed, but the responsibility of the covenant remained.
The Qur’an does not say that the mountain actually fell and crushed them. Its purpose in the account is warning, seriousness, and accountability. The lasting miracle is therefore not a tale of destruction, but a dramatic sign calling a community to take Allah’s revelation with resolve, remember it, and obey.
Conclusion
The raised-Mount episode is a powerful covenant sign: Allah made the seriousness of revelation visible before the Children of Israel and commanded them to hold the scripture firmly, remember its teachings, and obey. Its deepest lesson is that receiving divine guidance is not only an honor—it is a responsibility.
