The Qur’an presents the white hand of Prophet Moses as a carefully staged prophetic sign. After the staff had been transformed before him, Allah commanded Moses to draw his hand to his side or place it through the opening of his garment. When he brought it out, it appeared strikingly white without disease—another divine sign. Allah then sent Moses to Pharaoh with the staff and the white hand as two proofs. When Pharaoh demanded visible evidence, Moses displayed the hand openly and it appeared white to everyone watching.

The story begins at the moment when Moses is being prepared for one of the greatest confrontations of his mission. He has already seen his staff become a living serpent and then return to its former state. Immediately after that first sign, Allah gives him a second one. Moses is commanded to draw his hand close to his side; another Qur’anic passage describes placing it through the opening of his garment. When he brings the hand out, it is suddenly white without disease. The Qur’an calls it “another sign” and says that Moses is being shown some of Allah’s greatest signs.

That phrase—white without disease—is essential to the meaning. The transformation is not presented as illness, injury, leprosy, or an ordinary change of skin color. Classical exegetes repeatedly explain “without harm” as freedom from leprosy or bodily defect. They also commonly describe the hand as gleaming or shining, while keeping the Qur’anic foundation clear: an extraordinary visible whiteness appeared by Allah’s command. Some classical explanations add that when Moses returned his hand to its place, it returned to its normal color; that remains explanatory detail rather than a separate miracle.

The sign is then given a public purpose. Moses is not told merely to remember what he saw in private. In Surah al-Qasas, Allah calls the staff and the white hand “two proofs” from his Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. Surah al-Naml places the hand among the nine signs sent to Pharaoh and his people. The private experience at the divine call is therefore preparation for a public mission.

The confrontation reaches its climax when Moses stands before Pharaoh. Pharaoh challenges him to produce a sign if he is truthful. Moses first casts down the staff, and it becomes a manifest serpent. Then he draws out his hand. The Qur’an does not merely say that Moses himself noticed a change; it says that the hand was white “for the observers.” The people present could see it. The miracle had moved from private commissioning to public testimony.

Yet visible evidence did not force acceptance. Pharaoh and the leaders around him called Moses a learned magician and treated the signs as magic. Surah al-Naml describes the signs as visibly clear but says they were rejected through injustice and arrogance. That reaction gives the event its moral force: the white hand was not simply a startling physical phenomenon. It was a divine proof placed before an opponent who had demanded proof, a sign supporting Moses’ prophetic mission and exposing the difference between lack of evidence and refusal to accept evidence.

Conclusion

Authenticity: this is a high-confidence Qur’anic prophetic miracle. Its full story runs from Moses receiving a second sign at his divine commissioning to displaying that same white, unblemished hand before Pharaoh as one of Allah’s proofs. The strongest public wording stays with the Qur’an: white without disease, visible to the observers, and presented as evidence of Moses’ mission.
