al-Abbas ibn Jafar al-Sadiq

Al-Abbas was a son of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq ibn Imam Muhammad al-Baqir and a member of the Husaynid Hashimite family. In Shaykh al-Mufid's child list, al-Abbas, Ali, Asma, and Fatima are placed among children born to different unnamed slave mothers. His mother's personal name is therefore unknown, and it would be unsafe to attach her to a famous wife or create a conjectural registry person. He must also be distinguished from the Abbasid-era namesake al-Abbas ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ashath.

Shaykh al-Mufid gives the brief but clear assessment that al-Abbas was virtuous and noble. This is the most important early character statement preserved about him. It supports a description of personal merit, dignity, and family standing, but it has not been expanded into claims of a formal scholarly office, an independent hadith corpus, a political appointment, or an uprising, because no reliable separate evidence for such roles has been identified.

The Alid genealogist Abu Nasr al-Bukhari states in Sirr al-Silsila al-Alawiyya that al-Abbas ibn Jafar ibn Muhammad had neither a son nor a daughter and presents this as the agreement of the genealogists. Later source-indexed summaries likewise find no established line of descendants. No child relationship has therefore been added. Lack of descendants, however, does not prove that he never married, so no spouse name has been entered without evidence.

No strong early source preserves the year or place of his birth or death. Some later writing suggests Medina because of his family setting, but this remains a probability rather than an established date or place. No historically identified grave or independently authenticated shrine is known for him. The cautious conclusion is that he was a virtuous and noble son of Imam Jafar al-Sadiq whose individual biography is very limited and whose burial place is unknown.
