يقع مرقد السيد حمزة بن القاسم، المعروف بالحمزة الغربي رحمة الله عليه، في مدينة المدحتية بمحافظة بابل جنوب الحلة. وهو المدفن الرئيسي المعروف لعالم علوي من القرن الثالث الهجري يصل نسبه إلى العباس بن علي عليه السلام. وقد غلب اسم الحمزة الغربي على البلدة نفسها، فصار المرقد جزءا من هويتها الدينية والعمرانية ومن ذاكرة سكانها وزائريها.

تذكر كتب الأنساب والرجال اسمه أبا يعلى حمزة بن القاسم بن علي بن حمزة بن الحسن بن عبيد الله بن العباس بن علي بن أبي طالب. فهو من الفرع العباسي العلوي المنحدر من حامل راية كربلاء. ولم تكن منزلته قائمة على النسب وحده؛ فقد وصفه النجاشي بأنه ثقة جليل القدر، من علماء المدرسة الإمامية، وكثير الرواية، وهي أوصاف تثبت مكانه في البيئة العلمية لا في الذاكرة المحلية فقط.

تكشف الكتب المنسوبة إليه عن سعة نشاطه العلمي. فمنها كتاب في الرجال الذين رووا عن الإمام جعفر الصادق عليه السلام، وكتاب في التوحيد، وكتاب الزيارات والمناسك، وكتاب في الرد على محمد بن جعفر الأسدي. وتضعه هذه المؤلفات في مجالات نقد الرواة والعقيدة وفقه الزيارة وحفظ المرويات في عصر الغيبة الصغرى، حين كانت العناية بالسند والهوية العلمية ذات أهمية خاصة.

ومن الرواة والمتصلين بعلمه علي بن محمد القلانسي وهارون بن موسى التلعكبري. ووجود اسمه في الفهارس وكتب الرجال اللاحقة يدل على أنه كان جزءا من شبكة علمية حقيقية امتدت بين الرواية والتأليف والتوثيق، لا مجرد اسم لولي محلي. وتعلم سيرته أن خدمة أهل البيت قد تكون بحفظ أسماء الرواة، وتمييز الأخبار، وتنظيم المعرفة التعبدية وتعليمها للأجيال.

ترسخت نسبة قبره إلى المنطقة الواقعة جنوب الحلة منذ زمن بعيد. وتروي التواريخ المحلية المتأخرة أنه توفي في أثناء سفره أو مروره بهذه الناحية، ثم دفن في الموضع الذي نشأ حوله المرقد والبلدة. وتبقى تفاصيل الرحلة من الرواية المحلية، بينما اشتهرت نسبة القبر بين علماء العراق وسكان المنطقة. واسم الحمزة الغربي يميزه من الحمزة الشرقي الواقع إلى الجنوب في جغرافية أخرى.

يؤدي المجمع الحديث وظائف الصلاة والزيارة والمجالس الدينية وخدمة الزائرين والضيافة العامة. وتجمع أهميته بين سيرة محدث علوي، وذاكرة ذرية العباس بن علي عليه السلام، وتاريخ سورا والمدحتية في بابل. ويجد الزائر مكانا تدعمه كتب الرجال في هوية صاحبه، كما تدعمه تقاليد دفن محلية قديمة وتاريخ طويل من العمارة والرعاية الاجتماعية.

يربط المرقد بين الذاكرة النسبية للعباس بن علي عليه السلام والتاريخ العلمي الموثق للحديث والرجال الإمامي. فحمزة بن القاسم ليس اسما نسبيا أو وليا محليا فحسب، بل مؤلف وراو أسهمت كتبه في نقد المعرفة الدينية وتنظيمها.

وأثر المرقد في اسم المدحتية وهويتها يبين قدرة المزارات على تشكيل المدن. ويصل المجمع بين جغرافية سورا وبابل القديمة والزيارة الحديثة وخدمة الناس والحياة الدينية الإقليمية.
