Introduction
The present shrine attributed to Ibrahim ibn Malik al-Ashtar al-Nakha'i, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, stands south of Dujail in Salah al-Din Governorate. Classical sources strongly preserve his identity, victory at the Battle of al-Khazir, and death in the campaign of Maskin, while identification of the exact modern structure as the original grave belongs to regional devotional tradition. The biography is strong, and the present burial attribution is assessed at Level B.
His name was Ibrahim ibn Malik al-Ashtar ibn al-Harith al-Nakha'i. He belonged to Banu Nakha', an important branch of Madhhij. His father, Malik al-Ashtar al-Nakha'i, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, was a leading supporter and commander of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, May Allah Be Pleased With Him. Ibrahim inherited tribal standing, military experience, knowledge of Iraqi politics, and sympathy for the Alid cause.
He is generally treated as a political and military figure of the Tabi'i generation. His exact birth year is not securely preserved, but his life was shaped by the later legacy of the Rightly Guided Caliphate, Kufan politics after Imam Ali, the shock of Karbala, and Umayyad pressure over Iraq. His fame rests on command, strategy, and tribal organisation rather than a large body of transmitted scholarship.
Ibrahim became the principal commander of al-Mukhtar al-Thaqafi's movement. Kufa was divided among Arab tribes, mawali, the urban nobility, and anti-Umayyad groups. Ibrahim mattered not only because of courage; he was heir to a respected Nakha'i house, a tribal leader, and a commander able to understand both Kufan society and the military power of the Syrian army.
The Battle of al-Khazir was the defining event of his career. He left Kufa near the end of 66 AH to confront the army of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, and the decisive battle occurred in 67 AH near the Khazir River east of Mosul. Historical reports state that the Umayyad army was heavily defeated and that Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, Husayn ibn Numayr, and other senior Syrian commanders were killed. The victory profoundly affected post-Karbala politics in Iraq.
After al-Khazir, Ibrahim held authority in Mosul and nearby regions. When Mus'ab ibn al-Zubayr ended al-Mukhtar's rule, Ibrahim faced a new political order. Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan attempted to attract Iraqi commanders to the Umayyad side, but reports state that Ibrahim rejected the offer and remained with Mus'ab.
Around 71 or 72 AH, the forces of Mus'ab and Abd al-Malik met at Maskin or Dayr al-Jathaliq. Ibrahim showed Mus'ab the letter sent to win him over and warned that other chiefs might also have received such offers. He fought courageously, but the weakness of the Iraqi ranks and shifting loyalties led to his death in the battle. Classical histories firmly connect his final campaign with this setting.
The modern shrine preserves his memory within the religious and historical geography of Dujail and the wider Samarra region. Iraqi and local sources identify it as the mausoleum of Ibrahim ibn Malik al-Ashtar.
