Introduction
The tomb of Shaykh al-Mufid, May Allah Have Mercy On Him, near the al-Kazimayn shrine in Kadhimiya is one of the most important scholarly markers of Baghdad. His full name was Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Nu'man al-'Ukbari al-Baghdadi, and he was also known as Ibn al-Mu'allim because of his father’s profession as a teacher.
He was born near 'Ukbara around 336 or 338 AH. His father later brought him to Baghdad, where the city’s scholarly world included Imami, Mu'tazili, Sunni legal, theological, and philosophical circles. This dense intellectual environment shaped him into one of the most powerful theologians and jurists of his age.
He studied with major figures such as Shaykh al-Saduq, Ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi, Abu Yasir, Ali ibn Isa al-Rummani, and others. His scholarship joined hadith, reasoned theology, law, debate, and textual learning, making him not only a transmitter but a system-builder of Imami thought.
Different reports explain the title al-Mufid. Some connect it with a successful scholarly debate, while Imami devotional memory also associates him with honorable communications. In this entry, the title is treated as a sign of his intellectual influence, debate skill, and service to the Imami school in Baghdad, without turning later reports into unsupported certainty.
His students included al-Sharif al-Murtada, al-Sharif al-Radi, and Shaykh al-Tusi, May Allah Have Mercy On Them. Through them, his influence passed into theology, law, literature, hadith, and the later scholarly life of Najaf. In this sense, Shaykh al-Mufid stands between the Baghdad school and the later Najaf tradition.
His works include al-Irshad, Awa'il al-Maqalat, al-Muqni'a, Tashih al-I'tiqad, and al-Amali. Al-Irshad shaped later presentations of the lives of the Imams; Awa'il al-Maqalat and Tashih al-I'tiqad gave precise language to theological issues; and al-Muqni'a became an important work in Imami legal organization.
His teaching sessions in Baghdad were remembered as gatherings of intellectual discipline. Even opponents recognized his sharp memory, debate ability, and strength of argument. This makes him a model of scholarship in a city where religious disagreement was intense but scholarly method mattered deeply.
He died in 413 AH. Shaykh al-Tusi reports that his funeral gathered an extraordinary crowd and that many groups in Baghdad felt the loss. He was first buried in his own house, then later transferred to Kadhimiya near the shrine of Imam Musa al-Kazim, Peace Be Upon Him, close to Ibn Qulawayh al-Qummi.
For visitors, his tomb recalls knowledge, argument, theology, law, and service to the Ahl al-Bayt. For researchers, it shows that Baghdad’s religious history is not only a history of caliphs and buildings, but also of books, teaching circles, debates, students, and scholarly transmission.
The care of his present tomb in Kadhimiyah also demonstrates the continuing respect for scholarship. In 2016 a new wooden chest and covering were installed, and later new shrine grilles were produced for Shaykh al-Mufid and his teacher Ibn Qulawayh. These projects show that his grave, like his books, is treated as a continuing scholarly and devotional memorial.

Historical / Religious Importance
The tomb of Shaykh al-Mufid matters because he was one of the defining figures of Imami theology, law, and scholarly debate. His burial near al-Kazimayn connects his intellectual legacy with the devotional geography of Kadhimiya.
The site recalls a Baghdad in which knowledge developed not only in quiet study circles but also through debates, questions, theological disputes, and engagement with multiple scholarly communities. Shaykh al-Mufid gave Imami thought a disciplined intellectual language and trained students who shaped later centuries.
For researchers, the tomb shows that the grave of a scholar may become the marker of an entire school, a chain of books, a generation of students, and the scholarly spirit of a city.
