امام موسیٰ کاظم علیہ السلام نے انہیں دربار میں رہنے کی اجازت اس لیے دی کہ وہ مظلوموں، حاجت مندوں اور اہل ایمان کے لیے سہارا بن سکیں۔ روایات میں آتا ہے کہ علی بن یقطین اپنے منصب کو ذاتی اقتدار کے لیے نہیں بلکہ لوگوں کی حاجت روائی، قیدیوں کی مدد، اور اہل بیت سے وابستہ افراد کے تحفظ کے لیے استعمال کرتے تھے۔ اس پہلو سے ان کی زندگی سیاست اور تقویٰ کے نازک توازن کی مثال ہے۔
ان سے منسوب سب سے مشہور واقعہ وضو کے طریقے سے متعلق ہے۔ امام موسیٰ کاظم علیہ السلام نے ایک خاص وقت میں انہیں ایسا وضو کرنے کی ہدایت دی جو درباری ماحول میں ان پر سے شک کو دور کر سکے۔ جب ہارون الرشید کے دربار میں ان پر تشیع کا شبہ بڑھا تو اسی ظاہری طرز عمل نے انہیں خطرے سے بچایا۔ بعد میں امام نے انہیں اصل فقہی طریقے کی طرف لوٹنے کی اجازت دی۔ یہ واقعہ امامی مصادر میں تقیہ، حکمت، حفاظت اور امام کی تدبیر کے باب میں نقل ہوتا ہے۔
ایک اور مشہور بیان میں آتا ہے کہ ہارون نے علی بن یقطین کو ایک قیمتی لباس دیا، جسے انہوں نے امام موسیٰ کاظم علیہ السلام کی خدمت میں بھیج دیا۔ امام نے اسے واپس کر دیا اور فرمایا کہ اسے محفوظ رکھو، کیونکہ ایک دن اس کی ضرورت پڑے گی۔ بعد میں جب علی بن یقطین پر یہ الزام لگا کہ انہوں نے بادشاہ کا عطیہ امام کو بھیج دیا ہے، تو وہی لباس پیش کر کے انہوں نے اپنا دفاع کیا۔ یہ بیان امامی تذکروں میں امام کی بصیرت اور علی بن یقطین کی پوشیدہ وفاداری کے طور پر نقل ہوتا ہے۔
علی بن یقطین نے امام صادق علیہ السلام اور امام موسیٰ کاظم علیہ السلام سے روایات نقل کیں، اور ان کا شمار امام کاظم علیہ السلام کے اہم اصحاب میں ہوتا ہے۔ ان کے بارے میں روایات کی تعداد بھی قابل ذکر بتائی جاتی ہے۔ اس سے معلوم ہوتا ہے کہ وہ صرف سیاسی وزیر نہیں بلکہ علمی اور روایتی حلقے سے بھی وابستہ تھے۔
