زیارتگاه منسوب به علی بن یقطین، رحمت خدا بر او باد، در بصره ثبت شده است؛ در حالی که هویت تاریخی شناخته‌شده او بیشتر با دوره عباسی، بغداد و حلقه یاران امام موسی کاظم علیه السلام پیوند دارد. منابع رجالی و تاریخی امامیه از علی بن یقطین به عنوان دولتمرد، راوی، فقیه و پشتیبان وفادار اهل بیت یاد می‌کنند.

نام کامل او علی بن یقطین بن موسی بغدادی و کنیه‌اش ابوالحسن بود. اصل او را کوفی دانسته‌اند و او را از موالی بنی‌اسد شمرده‌اند. برای ولادتش سال‌های ۱۲۰، ۱۲۱ و ۱۲۴ هجری گزارش شده، در حالی که وفاتش عموما در سال ۱۸۲ هجری ثبت شده است. شیخ طوسی او را فردی موثق، بلندمرتبه و دارای جایگاهی بزرگ نزد امام موسی کاظم معرفی کرده است.

خانواده علی بن یقطین با نظام سیاسی عباسی ارتباط داشت. پدرش یقطین با جنبش و حکومت عباسی پیوند داشت، اما وفاداری خود علی با اهل بیت بود. همین وضعیت دوگانه ویژگی اصلی زندگی او شد: در ظاهر در دستگاه حکومت خدمت می‌کرد، ولی در درون به امام موسی کاظم وفادار بود و از جامعه شیعی حمایت می‌کرد.

امام موسی کاظم به او اجازه داد در منصب خود باقی بماند تا به ستمدیدگان یاری رساند، نیازمندان را کمک کند و از مؤمنان حفاظت نماید. گزارش‌ها می‌گویند علی بن یقطین از موقعیت خود برای قدرت شخصی استفاده نکرد، بلکه آن را در راه خدمت، رفع گرفتاری و حمایت به کار برد. ازاین‌رو زندگی او نمونه‌ای از تعادل دشوار میان مسئولیت سیاسی و وجدان دینی شد.

مشهورترین گزارش مربوط به او داستان وضو است. امام موسی کاظم برای مدتی به او دستور داد وضو را به شیوه‌ای انجام دهد که در محیط دربار سوءظن را از میان ببرد. هنگامی که هارون الرشید به او بدگمان شد، همین رفتار ظاهری از او حفاظت کرد. سپس امام اجازه داد به شیوه فقهی اصلی بازگردد. منابع امامی این داستان را درسی درباره احتیاط، حکمت، حفاظت و راهنمایی امام می‌دانند.

گزارش معروف دیگری می‌گوید هارون جامه‌ای گران‌بها به علی بن یقطین بخشید و او آن را برای امام موسی کاظم فرستاد. امام جامه را بازگرداند و فرمود آن را نگه دارد، زیرا بعدا به آن نیاز خواهد داشت. هنگامی که او را متهم کردند که هدیه خلیفه را برای امام فرستاده است، جامه را نشان داد و از خطر رهایی یافت. این روایت در حافظه رجالی امامیه نشانه دوراندیشی امام و وفاداری پنهان علی بن یقطین شمرده می‌شود.

علی بن یقطین از امام صادق و امام موسی کاظم علیهما السلام روایت کرده و در شمار یاران مهم امام موسی کاظم قرار گرفته است. شمار قابل توجهی روایت به او نسبت داده شده و نشان می‌دهد که او تنها یک وزیر سیاسی نبود، بلکه در شبکه علمی و عبادی امامان نیز حضور داشت.

وفات او در گزارش مشهور با بغداد پیوند دارد؛ ازاین‌رو زیارتگاه کنونی بصره با احتیاط یک مکان منسوب معرفی می‌شود. ممکن است حافظه محلی نام او را با احترام حفظ کرده باشد، اما اثبات قطعی دفن او در این مکان به بررسی تاریخی جداگانه نیاز دارد.
