His full name is Ali ibn Yaqtin ibn Musa al-Baghdadi, with the kunya Abu al-Hasan. He was of Kufan origin and is counted among the clients of Banu Asad. His birth is reported with different dates, including 120, 121, or 124 AH, while his death is commonly recorded in 182 AH. Shaykh al-Tusi described him as trustworthy, noble in rank, and of great standing with Imam Musa al-Kadhim.
Ali ibn Yaqtin’s family was connected with the Abbasid political order. His father Yaqtin had links with the Abbasid movement and government, but Ali’s loyalty was with the Ahl al-Bayt. This dual situation became the defining feature of his life: outwardly he served within the state, while inwardly he remained loyal to Imam Musa al-Kadhim and protected the Shi'i community.
Imam Musa al-Kadhim allowed him to remain in office so that he could support the oppressed, help the needy, and protect believers. Reports state that Ali ibn Yaqtin used his position not for personal power but for service, relief, and protection. His life therefore became an example of the delicate balance between political responsibility and religious conscience.
The most famous report connected with him concerns ablution. Imam Musa al-Kadhim instructed him for a period to perform ablution in a way that would remove suspicion in the courtly environment. When Harun al-Rashid became suspicious of him, that outward practice helped protect him. Later, the Imam allowed him to return to the original legal practice. Imami sources present this story as a lesson in caution, wisdom, protection, and the Imam’s guidance.
Another well-known report says that Harun gave Ali ibn Yaqtin a valuable garment, which Ali sent to Imam Musa al-Kadhim. The Imam returned it and told him to keep it, because it would be needed later. When Ali was later accused of sending the caliph’s gift to the Imam, he produced the garment and was saved from danger. This report is transmitted in Imami biographical memory as a sign of the Imam’s foresight and Ali ibn Yaqtin’s hidden loyalty.
Ali ibn Yaqtin narrated from Imam al-Sadiq and Imam al-Kadhim, Peace Be Upon Them, and is counted among the important companions of Imam al-Kadhim. A notable number of reports are attributed to him, showing that he was not merely a political minister but also part of the scholarly and devotional network of the Imams.
