Introduction

The Maqam of Imam Zayn al-Abidin in al-Hashimiyah, Babil Province, is an attributed devotional memorial, not a grave. Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-Abidin's recognised burial is in Jannat al-Baqi in Medina. The al-Hashimiyah site belongs to later local devotional memory, and the accessible early historical sources do not conclusively establish that he stayed, prayed or passed at this exact place.

Imam Zayn al-Abidin was the son of Imam al-Husayn and the central heir to the scholarly and spiritual leadership of the Ahl al-Bayt after Karbala. Illness prevented him from fighting on Ashura, but he travelled with the captive household to Kufa and Damascus and later guided the community in Medina through worship, teaching, ethics and quiet social service.

The site's devotional meaning is drawn from these well-attested aspects of his legacy. The supplications of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, the organisation of human responsibilities in Risalat al-Huquq and accounts of discreet assistance to the poor are remembered as moral lessons in local gatherings and visitation. His biography gives the memorial meaning, but does not prove the exact historical attribution of the place.

Muharram, Safar and commemorations of the Imam's death maintain the site within Babil's religious geography of devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt. The general biography has been deliberately shortened so that the article remains centred on this particular non-burial memorial and its local devotional function.

For visitors, the maqam conveys patience, prayer, human rights and hidden service. For researchers, its importance lies in preserving a clear distinction: the historical Imam and his principal burial in al-Baqi are established, while the al-Hashimiyah association is later local devotional tradition.

Historical / Religious Importance

The al-Hashimiyah maqam is not the grave of Imam Zayn al-Abidin but a local devotional memorial in Babil. His recognised principal burial is in Jannat al-Baqi.

Its importance lies in connecting the ethical meanings of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya, Risalat al-Huquq, patience after Karbala and discreet service with local gatherings and visitation.

For research, the page separates the authenticated personality and principal burial from a later local attribution; it is therefore classified as a secondary attributed place.
