Introduction

This active local shrine near Hayy al-Sikak in the Al-Maqal area of Basra is known in official and public usage as the shrine of Sayyid Yasif ibn Ali, May Allah Have Mercy On Him. The present building, local care and continuing activity of the official shrine administration establish the current identity of the place. The available material, however, does not independently establish his historical period, the antiquity of the burial or a complete genealogy, so the site is described as an attributed tomb.

The preserved name is Yasif ibn Ali, and official as well as local tradition calls him a sayyid and a righteous figure. His father is named as Ali, but no reliable continuous genealogy to an Imam or a recognized Alid branch was found. The earlier Sayyids and Imamzadas category has therefore been removed. The respected local title is retained without treating it as proof of a specific lineage.

The strongest documented feature of the site is its present religious activity. Official reports record Quran gatherings, instruction in memorization and tajwid, religious assemblies, commemorative programmes connected with the Ahl al-Bayt, and lessons on family and social education. The shrine is therefore not only a place for al-Fatiha and prayer but also an active local center of religious learning in urban Basra.

The shrine has also organized social service, including blood-donation activity for sick children. This work joins visitation, Quran education and public care in one institution. For visitors it remains a respected local memory; for researchers it is essential to distinguish the documented role of the modern shrine from the limited historical evidence about the person associated with it.

Historical / Religious Importance

The historical value of the site rests primarily in its role within modern urban religious heritage, official shrine administration and local religious education in Basra.

Because the biographical evidence is limited, its accurate classification is an attributed tomb and local shrine. This caution preserves respect while preventing an unverified genealogy or ancient history from being presented as fact.

Notes: Official shrine-administration reports establish the present institution, its local name, Quran education, religious programmes and community service. They do not provide a complete classical biography or an independently verified genealogical chain. The former Sayyids and Imamzadas category was therefore removed to avoid presenting an unproven lineage as fact. No book reference was inserted because no suitable historical book source was materially used.
