Introduction
The Maqam of al-Abbas ibn Ali, Peace Be Upon Him, in the Mosul Waterfalls area was not his burial place. It was a secondary devotional site associated with the memory of Karbala and his loyalty. His recognized principal burial place is the Shrine of al-Abbas in Karbala near the al-Alqama watercourse.
Shabak and other local communities in northern Iraq used the site for Muharram, Ashura, vows, and gatherings devoted to the Ahl al-Bayt. Its attribution did not depend on a historical visit or burial claim. It represented al-Abbas's standard-bearing role, loyalty, service to the thirsty, and sacrifice beside Imam al-Husayn.
Al-Abbas was the son of Imam Ali and Lady Umm al-Banin Fatima bint Hizam, Peace Be Upon Her. At Karbala he carried Imam al-Husayn's standard, rejected an offer of protection from the opposing camp, and was martyred during an effort associated with obtaining water. This concise and well-established identity explains the ethical meaning of the Mosul maqam.
Reports on Nineveh's religious heritage state that the Maqam al-Abbas in the Al-Shallalat area was destroyed by the so-called Islamic State in 2014. During the same period, numerous Islamic, Christian, Yazidi, Shabak, and other religious monuments in Nineveh were systematically destroyed. The loss of the building was therefore an attack on local memory, religious diversity, and the pre-war social landscape.
The essential clarification for visitors is that this was not the grave of al-Abbas; it was a commemorative Mosul maqam. Documenting and potentially rebuilding it are important for recovering northern Iraq's devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt, Shabak religious memory, and cultural heritage damaged by war.
Historical / Religious Importance
The Mosul maqam was not the actual grave of al-Abbas; it was a regional centre of Karbala's ethical memory and devotion to the Ahl al-Bayt in northern Iraq. This distinction gives the principal Karbala shrine and the Mosul memorial their correct roles.
Its destruction in 2014 formed part of the wider damage to Nineveh's religious diversity and Shabak cultural memory. Documenting the site is essential for recovering sacred places and local identities affected by war.
