Medina
Medina, the capital of Al Madinah Region in western Saudi Arabia, occupies a foundational place in Islamic history. Known as Yathrib before the Hijra, it became the residence of Prophet Muhammad after his migration from Mecca in 622 CE and the center of the early Muslim community. The Prophet’s Mosque grew from the mosque established after his arrival and remains the city’s defining religious landmark. Because the modern city, the wider region and sites associated with early Islam overlap in popular memory, historical statements need to distinguish the urban place from the surrounding province and from later devotional traditions.
This IslamicPedia city page brings together documented religious sites, historical figures and map locations connected with Medina. Entries should be read as separate records: a well-attested mosque, a person’s association with the city and a traditional burial attribution are not the same kind of evidence. The map helps locate records within the present city while the notes preserve source-based cautions where identification, dating or attribution is uncertain.
