Islamic scripture presents the Night Journey and heavenly ascent as a religious event, while a modern interpretive work uses special relativity, time dilation and light-speed language to make aspects of the journey more imaginable to contemporary readers. Einstein’s theory genuinely changes how elapsed time and motion are measured between inertial frames, but it neither discusses Mi‘raj nor supplies historical evidence for it. The sound conclusion is to keep the religious evidence, the modern analogy and the physical theory in separate layers.

The story begins in the religious sources, not in modern physics. Qur’an 17:1 states that God took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa to show him His signs. Sahih al-Bukhari 3207 gives a fuller account of the heavenly ascent: the Prophet ﷺ travels with Gabriel, passes through the heavens, meets earlier prophets, reaches Sidrat al-Muntaha and receives the command of the daily prayers. These sources establish the Islamic narrative, but they do not describe relativity, a light-speed calculation or any physical mechanism for the journey.

Many centuries later, modern readers began asking whether contemporary science could make such an extraordinary journey easier to imagine. In the verified chapter of Falsafa-e-Mi‘raj al-Nabi, Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri invokes Einstein’s special relativity, the speed of light, time dilation and length contraction. The discussion also uses a ninety-percent-of-light-speed example and then speaks of Buraq in terms of speeds beyond light. This is a modern interpretive layer placed beside the religious account.

Relativity does provide a real and important scientific insight: elapsed time depends on the state of motion. Einstein’s 1905 paper treats the speed of light as invariant and derives the moving-clock relation. At ninety percent of light speed, the standard clock-rate factor is about 0.436, not exactly one half. The same theory also does not permit ordinary massive bodies to be accelerated through the speed of light; Einstein’s treatment makes the light-speed boundary fundamental.

That scientific boundary changes how the modern analogy should be presented. Relativity may help a reader understand that time need not be measured identically by differently moving observers, but it does not turn the Mi‘raj narrative into a laboratory result. Likewise, language about travelling many times faster than light is not a prediction of ordinary special relativity for a massive traveler.

The careful conclusion keeps the layers distinct. Mi‘raj is affirmed in Islamic sources on religious evidence. Relativity is a physical theory about measurements of space, time and motion. A later author may use that theory as an illustration, but science has not independently proved the historical occurrence of Mi‘raj, and the ordinary limits of relativity should not be presented as a scientific disproof of a miracle claimed within a theological framework.

Conclusion

Mi‘raj rests on Islamic textual evidence, while relativity supplies a modern way to discuss time and motion. Keeping those evidentiary layers separate preserves both the religious claim and the actual scope of the physics.
