After asking Allah for forgiveness, Prophet Sulaiman عليه السلام prayed for a kingdom unlike any that would follow him. The Qur’an then describes jinn and devils serving within that divinely granted dominion as builders, divers and other workers, while rebellious ones were restrained. Their service existed only by Allah’s permission and control. The story later sets a decisive boundary: after Sulaiman’s death, the jinn themselves were shown not to possess knowledge of the unseen.
Within that unique kingdom, devils and jinn were subjected to demanding work. Surah Sad describes some as builders and divers, while other rebellious ones were bound together in shackles. Surah al-Anbiya adds that some dived for Sulaiman and performed work besides diving, and then states that Allah Himself guarded them. The extraordinary authority therefore remained completely under divine control.
Surah Saba gives the service a more concrete shape. It says that jinn worked before Sulaiman only by the permission of his Lord, and that any who deviated from Allah’s command faced punishment. They produced elevated structures or sanctuaries, fashioned representations, huge basin-like vessels and heavy cauldrons fixed in place. Classical commentators commonly explain the divers as entering the sea to retrieve pearls, jewels and other valuables. That is an explanatory tafsir layer; the Qur’an itself establishes diving and other labor.
At the height of this extraordinary dominion, the Qur’an turns attention to gratitude: “Work, O family of Dawud, in gratitude.” The kingdom was not meant to become a story of power alone. The proper response to such gifts was thankful obedience, and Allah reminds that only a few servants are truly grateful.
The final scene places an essential limit around the whole account. When Allah decreed Sulaiman’s death, the jinn did not know he had died. Their ignorance continued until a creature of the earth ate through his staff and he fell. Only then did the truth become clear: if the jinn had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating labor.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ later remembered Sulaiman’s unique supplication when an ifrit tried to interrupt his prayer. Although Allah enabled him to seize it, he refrained from publicly binding it after recalling his brother Sulaiman’s prayer.
The story therefore moves from prayer to divine gift, from vast service to gratitude, and finally from power to clarity: Sulaiman’s kingdom was unique because Allah granted it, the jinn served because Allah subjected them, and knowledge of the unseen remained beyond them.
Conclusion
This is an extraordinary prophetic gift within Sulaiman’s uniquely granted kingdom. Allah subjected jinn and devils as builders, divers and workers, restrained rebels, and kept the dominion under His control. The Qur’an’s strongest boundary remains central: the power was Allah’s gift, gratitude was its moral demand, and the jinn did not know the unseen.
