The Qur’an presents Prophet Sulaiman’s understanding of non-human speech as an explicit divine gift. He publicly says that he had been taught the speech of birds and calls the wider endowment a manifest favor from Allah. At the valley of the ants, he understands a single ant warning its community, smiles at her words, and immediately prays for gratitude, righteous action, and Allah’s mercy. The same gift appears again when the hoopoe brings detailed news from Saba, yet Sulaiman does not accept the report blindly: he decides to test its truth and then sends the bird with a letter.

The story begins with knowledge before it begins with spectacle. The Qur’an says that Allah gave Dawud and Sulaiman knowledge, and both responded with praise. Sulaiman then addresses his people and openly says that he has been taught the speech of birds. He does not present this ability as something he discovered by himself. He calls the wider gift a manifest bounty.

The next scene places that gift inside a kingdom of remarkable scale. Sulaiman’s forces are organized from humans, jinn, and birds and move in disciplined ranks. Yet the most memorable demonstration does not come from a great battlefield or royal ceremony. It comes from a tiny creature at ground level.

As the army reaches the valley of the ants, one ant warns the others to enter their dwellings so that Sulaiman and his soldiers do not crush them without realizing it. The wording matters. The ant recognizes danger, but does not accuse Sulaiman of intentional cruelty. The Qur’an then shows the extraordinary part with complete simplicity: Sulaiman understands what she has said.

His response gives the miracle its moral center. He smiles at the ant’s words, but the moment does not become a display of power. He turns immediately to Allah and asks to be enabled to give thanks for the favor granted to him and his parents, to perform deeds pleasing to Allah, and to be admitted by divine mercy among the righteous. Extraordinary understanding produces gratitude, not self-glorification.

The narrative then gives a second, very different demonstration through the hoopoe. Sulaiman inspects the birds and notices that the hoopoe is missing. When the bird returns, it brings specific news from Saba: a woman rules there, she possesses a great throne, and her people are prostrating to the sun instead of Allah. Remarkably, the hoopoe even says that it has learned something Sulaiman has not yet learned.

Sulaiman’s response is equally important. He does not assume that an extraordinary messenger must automatically be correct. He says that the report will be tested to see whether the hoopoe has spoken truthfully. He then gives the bird a letter, tells it to deliver the message, withdraw, and observe the response.

The complete Qur’anic story is therefore richer than a claim that Sulaiman could “talk to animals.” Allah granted him intelligible understanding across the human and non-human worlds, but the Qur’an frames that gift through gratitude, mercy, disciplined leadership, and verification. The smallest voice in the valley is heard, a bird can bring major political and religious information, and the prophet who receives these remarkable communications still responds with humility and careful judgment.

Conclusion

Authenticity: the event’s central features are directly Qur’anic in An-Naml 27:15–28, while classical tafsir consistently treats Sulaiman’s comprehension as a special divine endowment. The strongest public story is not unlimited knowledge or universal animal speech, but an Allah-given capacity demonstrated in the ant and hoopoe episodes and used with gratitude, compassion, verification, and righteous responsibility.
