The Qur’an gives a direct and unusually complete healing sequence involving Prophets Yusuf and Yaqub. Yaqub’s eyes had become white from grief over Yusuf. After Yusuf was reunited with his brothers in Egypt, he gave them his shirt and told them to place it over their father’s face, stating that he would become seeing again. As the caravan departed, Yaqub said that he could perceive Yusuf’s scent. When the bearer of good news arrived and cast the shirt over his face, the Qur’an states that Yaqub returned seeing. Classical tafsir confirms this core while preserving additional, non-Qur’anic details with varying reports.

The event belongs to the closing movement of Surah Yusuf, after years of separation between Yusuf and his father Yaqub. Earlier in the surah, Yaqub’s grief is described in striking terms: he turns away from his sons in sorrow over Yusuf, and his eyes become white from grief while he suppresses what he feels. The Qur’an does not give a modern medical diagnosis, but the later restoration verse makes clear that his ability to see had been lost or gravely impaired.

Yaqub’s grief never becomes despair of Allah. He tells his sons that he complains of his anguish and sorrow only to Allah and that he knows from Allah what they do not know. This spiritual posture matters because the final restoration is presented within a story of patience, hope, reunion, and divine mercy rather than as an isolated physical wonder.

In Egypt, after Yusuf reveals his identity to his brothers and forgives them, he gives a specific instruction. He tells them to take his shirt and cast it over his father’s face, and he states that his father will become seeing. He then orders them to bring the whole family to him. The prediction is explicit in the Qur’anic text: Yusuf does not merely send a keepsake or a symbolic token; he announces the expected restoration before the shirt reaches Yaqub.

As the caravan leaves Egypt, Yaqub says that he can perceive the scent of Yusuf. Those around him dismiss what he says as his old preoccupation. The story then moves directly to the arrival of the bearer of good news. The shirt is cast over Yaqub’s face, and the Qur’an states that he returns seeing. Yaqub responds by reminding those around him that he had told them he knew from Allah what they did not know.

Classical al-Tabari explains the key wording in the same direction: Yusuf’s father would return to sight, and after the shirt was placed on his face he became seeing again after blindness. This supports the plain Qur’anic sequence without requiring later embellishment.

Some classical commentaries discuss who carried the shirt, whether it had an earlier sacred history, how far the journey was, and other details. Those reports vary and are not part of the Qur’an’s explicit wording. The strongest public account therefore stays with the secure core: Yusuf, by knowledge granted by Allah, foretells that his shirt will be a means in his father’s restoration; the shirt reaches Yaqub; his sight returns; and the family’s long separation moves toward reunion. The miracle belongs to Allah’s power and mercy, not to any independent power imagined in the cloth itself.

Conclusion

Authenticity: this is a high-confidence prophetic miracle with an explicit Qur’anic core. The strongest form of the story is the direct sequence from Yaqub’s grief-related loss of sight to Yusuf’s foretelling, the arrival of the shirt, and the Qur’an’s statement that Yaqub returned seeing. Classical tafsir supports the core meaning, while disputed narrative expansions remain outside the established public account.
