Umm Habib bint Rabi'a, also known as al-Sahba al-Taghlibiyya, was a woman associated with the Banu Taghlib. Early genealogical and biographical sources identify her as the mother of Umar al-Akbar ibn Ali and Ruqayya bint Ali, children of Ali ibn Abi Talib. Independent details about her life are scarce, so a reliable profile must remain limited to the information consistently preserved in early family, biographical and rijal works.

Biography and historical profile

She is most consistently identified as al-Sahba, with the kunya Umm Habib. Ibn Sa'd and Mus'ab al-Zubayri transmit Umm Habib bint Rabi'a ibn Bujayr of Banu Taghlib; al-Baladhuri preserves the variant bint Habib ibn Bujayr, while Ibn Hajar's entry uses the nisba al-Tha'labiyya. These differences prevent a definitive reconstruction of every element of her paternal genealogy, but her identity as al-Sahba or Umm Habib and her connection with Umar and Ruqayya remain stable across the principal reports.

The strongest early accounts place her among captives connected with Khalid ibn al-Walid's campaigns against groups of Banu Taghlib in the Ayn al-Tamr region. Genealogical sources preserve her as the mother of Umar al-Akbar and Ruqayya through Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Genealogical works identify Umar al-Akbar ibn Ali and Ruqayya bint Ali as her children, and some accounts describe them as twins. Reliable sources do not preserve a detailed independent record of Umm Habib's birth, death, learning, public activity or personal life. Her historical identity consequently survives mainly through the recorded genealogy of Ali's household and her children.

Historical importance and legacy

The historical importance of Umm Habib al-Sahba al-Taghlibiyya lies chiefly in the genealogy of the Alid family. Early works of genealogy, tabaqat and rijal record her as the mother of Umar al-Akbar ibn Ali and Ruqayya bint Ali. Because the surviving evidence is limited, unsupported narratives about her virtues, later life or burial have not been included.
