Introduction

The historic complex at Al-Kifl is revered as a maqam of Dhu al-Kifl, Peace Be Upon Him, and in Jewish tradition as the tomb of the prophet Ezekiel. The Qur'an praises Dhu al-Kifl for patience and righteousness but does not identify his personal name, exact era, or burial place. The identification of Dhu al-Kifl with Ezekiel is old and influential, yet it is not unanimously accepted by exegetes and historians. The site is therefore best described as a shared historic and attributed sacred complex.

Dhu al-Kifl is mentioned in Surahs al-Anbiya and Sad among the patient and righteous. Ibn Kathir and other commentators considered the Qur'anic context supportive of prophethood, while Mujahid and some early interpreters described him as a righteous and just man who accepted a demanding responsibility and fulfilled it. Despite differences over identity and status, patience, justice, and faithfulness to duty remain the central themes.

The tomb stands within the historic Al-Nukhailah Mosque complex in the town of Al-Kifl. Its conical dome, medieval minaret, Islamic inscriptions, Hebrew texts, covered market, and adjoining burials reveal a layered history. Iraqi Jewish tradition regarded it as Ezekiel's burial place connected with the Babylonian exile, while Muslim visitors associated the complex with Dhu al-Kifl, the mosque, and local Islamic sacred history.

For centuries the site attracted both Jewish and Muslim pilgrims and accumulated architecture from different periods. In 2010 Iraq's State Board of Antiquities and Heritage submitted the Site of Thilkifl to UNESCO's Tentative List, presenting it as a complex where religious traditions and cultural memories converge. A Tentative List entry records the State Party's nomination; it is not independent UNESCO authentication of the site's prophetic identity. Modern restoration and administrative changes make preservation of the Hebrew inscriptions, Islamic architectural elements, and the character of shared heritage especially important.

Visitors should understand that the equation of the Qur'anic Dhu al-Kifl with the biblical Ezekiel is a respected but disputed identification. This uncertainty does not reduce the monument's historical value. On the contrary, it explains why Al-Kifl is important to the history of Babylonian exile, Iraqi Judaism, Islamic pilgrimage, architecture, and interreligious memory.

The moral significance of the place centers on responsibility and trust. Traditions about Dhu al-Kifl emphasize accepting a duty and fulfilling it with justice, while Ezekiel's memory speaks to hope during exile and collective hardship. Together they make the complex a lesson in preserving faith, fairness, and community memory under difficult conditions.

Historical / Religious Importance

Al-Kifl is one of Iraq's most significant examples of shared religious heritage, bringing Qur'anic memory, the Babylonian exile, Iraqi Jewish history, and Islamic pilgrimage into one architectural complex.

Its conical dome, historic minaret, multilingual inscriptions, and old market make it an important monument of Babil's urban and architectural history. Inclusion on UNESCO's Tentative List records Iraq's heritage nomination and highlights, rather than independently verifies, its wider heritage value.

The site teaches that disputed identity does not prevent responsible preservation. It calls for respect for religious diversity and for protection of both Hebrew and Islamic features during restoration and administration.
